Live transmission of Bayreuth and Salzburg Festivals

Recommended Posts

Saw this on an advertisement on NYTimes.com. I loved watching the live Don Giovanni so much, I clicked on it. Siemens, a sponsor, is showing live broadcasts of performances at these festivals. The next streaming broadcast is for Mozart´s "Così fan tutte" at Saltzburg on July 30. The next from Bayreuth is "Tristan and Isolde." If you can't watch it live, there's also a period that you can watch it On Demand:

Editing to add that there appears to be some fee. I guess if you don't mind paying....

There is a different fee for each: 7,90 Euros for the Salzburg and 14,90 Euros for the Bayreuth.

The Salzburg is tomorrow, and it starts at 7pm Central Summer Time, or 10am PDT/1pm EDT. The video test states that my bandwidth is not fast enough, but the Bayreuth sample video test was fine. I think an $11 investment is worth it, especially since it's at a reasonable time of day for the live broadcast.

Thanks, Dale. The fee doesn't seem too bad.

I was able to tune into "Cosi" an hour into the performance.

Some more info:

  • It's a contemporary dress production.
  • There are no subtitles, but the libretto can be downloaded from the site
  • "On demand" is available from 1 August - 7 August CEST (PDT-9, EDT-6, GMT -2)
  • Cast List

There's no info about subtitles or libretto that I can find on the website for Sunday's "Tristan".

Please note the very long intermissions:

1st Act: 1 hour 25 minutes (3 p.m. to approx. 4.30 p.m.)

Intermission from 4.30 p.m. 5.30 p.m.

2nd Act: 1 hour 25 minutes (5.30 p.m. to approx. 7 p.m.)

Intermission from 7 p.m. 7.50 p.m.

3rd Act: 1 hour 15 minutes (7.50 p.m. to approx. 9.10 p.m).

Cast list:

Tristan is Robert Dean Smith.

Isolde is Irene Theorin, who sang Wagner at the Met this past season. (I think in The Ring.)
