Alexandra
New York Magazine has an online article touting its new Culture Coverage. http://newyorkmetro.com/nymag/culture/10204/ It lists the arts it will cover, but dance is not one of them. When the magazine cut is dance column, and long-time NY Mag critic Tobi Tobias, awhile back, there was an outcry in the dance community which caused the magazine to backtrack (outcry = lots and lots and lots of emails.) They then hired a new critic -- Laura Shapiro -- and covered some dance performances, although not nearly as many as they had in the past. I've written the following query to the editors: In your article about the new culture sections at NYMag -- http://newyorkmetro.com/nymag/culture/10204/ -- dance is not mentioned. Is this an oversight? (i.e., you will still cover dance at least somewhat, but didn't mention it in the article) or are you once again dropping dance coverage? Our website, Ballet Alert, which has 200,000 readers on its message board each month, would like to know.Thank you! Alexandra Tomalonis, Editor www.danceviewtimes.com www.balletallert.com I'll post the response I get. If they have dropped dance again, please saddle your horses! Link to comment
carbro
Thanks, Alexandra. Dumping works both ways, you know. When NYMag ran Tobi, I read it (her). When they dumped her, I dumped them. There was sooooo little to justify a subscription. Link to comment
dirac
Oh, dear, not again. This surprises me. Shapiro has appeared in the magazine since Moss took over, and I was actually pleased, because she got an entire page of space, which didn't happen all the time for her before. I hope it's just an oversight (although even an oversight would be bad enough -- they wouldn't just forget about theatre or film). Link to comment
dirac
I have been keeping an eye out and I've seen nothing in the way of reviews in New York for months. I may be missing something, but I don't think so. Link to comment

They keep sending me renewel notices & I keep sending them back marked CANCEL - call me when you start regular ballet coverage again. I doubt if it does any good but it makes me feel beter! fandeballet
And its name should be changed from New York. And this is supposed to be one of, if not THE Dance Capital(s) of the World. Link to comment
dirac
Shapiro is still listed as their dance critic, and her archived articles are available online (none of them recent). It's an interesting way to do things -- nominally dance is there, and yet it's not. Link to comment
