What the well heeled dancer is wearing this fall
BalletFlaMom replied to Funny Face's topic in Everything Else Ballet
Actually, I can REALLY envision someone wearing the Degas shoes. Come on nlkflint, back me up on this....can't you just see an elderly gentleman from Palm Beach, wearing one of his famous pink jackets and yellow pants ensembles and THESE shoes at the Kravis Center? LOL - TOO FUNNY -
NOT ballet, I know, but an amazing dancer nonetheless. He has died at 57. http://entertainment.msn.com/news/article....spx?news=130808

Wasn't quite sure where to post this - so, of course, please feel free to relocate if necessary. I was just wondering if anyone either saw this performance (7/26 at Irvine Barclay Theatre) and would share their "reivew" or had a link to any review. I have a friend who was one of the choreographers and another who was one of the dancers! Thanx!

The FAU Concert Series (normally) is a different program than that listed in the "South Florida Repertory". My daughter and I go there on occaision, as well as attending the Kravis performances.

Ahh, dirac, I remember the scene well, brings a "tear" to this retired dancer's eye.

I have no trouble with the site either - I posted the press release e-mailed to me on February 20 on the Miami City Ballet page of this site.

I am a subscriber to MCB and received this from them.... Since joining Miami City Ballet during its start-up years in 1987, Iliana Lopez and Franklin Gamero have been two of the Company's most revered and beloved performers. After 16 distinguished years as the leading principal dancers with Miami City Ballet, the couple is announcing their retirement following the upcoming 2003-2004 season. "Iliana and Franklin are part of the heart and soul, as well as an indelible part of the history, of Miami City Ballet," said Edward Villella, Founding Artistic Director of Miami City Ballet. "They have literally led the way from the Company's early days to what it has become - one of the finest classical ballet companies in America - today. They have danced almost every major role in the Company's extensive repertory, served as role models and sources of inspiration to scores of young dancers in the Company and enchanted audiences in Florida, the US and abroad, with their bravura technique and sensitive artistry. It has been a profound pleasure for me to work with them and to experience the expansiveness of spirit that they brought to Miami City Ballet." Lopez and Gamero are married. They have danced many famous roles together including "Swan Lake", "Giselle", "Tschaikovsky Pas De Deux", "Rubies" and "Diamonds" from "Jewels", "Prodigal Son", among others. They both trained with Nina Nikanorova and danced with the Cleveland Ballet. They have performed extensively as guest artists and participated in prestigious festivals including the 20th Anniversary Gala for Wolf Trap and the Vail International Dance Festival. Both native Venezuelans, Lopez and Gamero received the 2000 National Medal for the Arts "Arturo Michelena" in Venezuela for outstanding contribution to the arts. Don't miss Iliana and Franklin's farewell season. For 2003-2004 subscription information, call our Box Office at (305) 929-7010 or toll-free (877) 929-7010

PERFECT Mr. Witchel! (PK - I LOVE the "noodle" plan!) Laura

I, too, am SHOCKED and AMAZED at "some people" these days! My daughter and I both have cell phones and always remember to turn them off at a performance, of any kind, we went to the Greater PB Symphony this past Friday and to a Ballet Florida performance on Sunday. At both performances cell phones were ringing, at the ballet, (during a particularly 'quiet' moment of - Jerome Robbins' In the Night) someone actually answered their phone and carried on a conversation 2 rows behind us for about 3 minutes - this despite the "sshhhh's" from those nearby. I do, though love Lolly's Royal Albert Hall story, though I'm sure it wouldn't have any effect on most of the American theatre goers!

The Nutcracker -- Is it a seasonal "must see"?
BalletFlaMom replied to fendrock's topic in Everything Else Ballet
The last time I saw an "entire" Nutcracker was about 7 years ago! Having just recently left the Company I worked for, I will go see the whole thing this year - can't wait, really. My daughter has not seen it at all (with the exception of the bits and pieces she saw while waiting in the wings) since she was 5 - we've just gone out and purchased her a lovely "gown" to wear. So for us, for THIS season, it IS a "must see". -
I don't know if I'm allowed to post links here, but this is from the Palm Beach Post - my daughter and I attended Saturday evening's performance. http://www.gopbi.com/partners/pbpost/epape...db01080035.html (I hope my attempt at providing this link works!) ;)

The art of discovery or how you found yourself here.
BalletFlaMom replied to Estelle's topic in 2002 -- Looking Back
I remember myself just sort of "stumbling" across it, viewing some of the posts and then joining (August 2001). I initially did not post often, as I found people (in MY LITTLE MIND, at least) neither friendly, nor very "forgiving", it seemed to me a "I KNOW better than YOU attitude" (AGAIN, this is all relevant to ME!!). Actually, it was you BW, I believe, in an evening AOL IM convo that convinced me to "check it out again". I did, I LOVE it, I've gotten OVER my "childish" paranoia! -

Even less decent programming on PBS?
BalletFlaMom replied to Ed Waffle's topic in 2002 -- Looking Back
We have a super channel in our area. It is called simply "Arts". They show short (under 15-20 minutes) films, opera, recitals (of the piano variety), ballet and other dance forms. It really is quite nice, my daughter loves it! She gets to see Dame Fonteyn or Alvin Ailey every now and again as well as "current" dancers. I know they have a website, they mention it occasionally for "donations", I will write it down next time I see it and share with anyone who would like it. This is a non-commercial channel, but not affiliated in any way with PBS, we have 2 PBS stations in our area, every once in a great while there is something of interest to us there. -

I work at Ballet Florida (West Palm Beach, Florida) the Palm Beach Post's obituary of Mr. Nebrada is at http://www.gopbi.com/partners/pbpost/epape...d560e900f7.html Most of us were notified by telephone on Memorial Day, in a phone chain. We here are all sad and have a small memorial standing in our box office lobby.
