  9. That could be part of the problem. I think "The Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers Book" was Croce's only book, as opposed to a collection, and even that was more of an extended essay. Synthesizing her thoughts about Balanchine into book form may have been a challenge.
  10. I think better of Cooper's efforts than you do, but I much prefer Sam Wanamaker's Bernsteinish-conductor in "The Competition." (Worst channeling of Bernstein and also one of the worst depictions of a conductor I've ever seen - John Cassavetes flailing away in the Columbo episode "Etude in Black.") Also, not enough lines like "For me, nobody handles Handel the way you handle Handel."
  11. You weren't under a rock. Bernstein didn't come out publicly, although he lived and traveled with Cothran in a way that did cause some scandal within the profession, not to mention some distress for his daughter when Bernstein held court and partied with Cothran at Harvard for a year while she was an undergraduate (not so much because of Cothran as the way in which Bernstein was barging through his daughter's territory as she was trying to establish some independence). Thank you for those links, Quiggin. I agree that Cothran was shortchanged in the movie, although to tell the whole story would have meant another hour, I'd say. The Napolitano article suggests that Bernstein went back to Felicia to care for her, but I have read that Bernstein and Cothran had broken up and Bernstein was back with Felicia before, but apparently very soon after, the diagnosis. (I don't remember how Maestro handles the timing.) Although i also think he was basically gay he missed his life as a pere de famille and he missed his wife. Of course today things would likely have worked out very differently.
  12. I agree, Jayne, Bernstein lived too large to fit it all into two hours. A multi-season series might be a bit much for general appeal, but a limited series might be just the thing.
  13. Didn't Kowroski dance a lot of old Farrell roles? If so, the original cast member would be Diana Adams, who danced the girl who has the "whispering" pas de deux if I recall correctly, which role then went to Farrell and then to von Aroldingen after Farrell left. The ballet was then out of repertory until a revival not long after Balanchine's death, when it was staged by von Aroldingen and Farrell was first cast in her old role. (Robert Garis' theory was that Balanchine didn't want to take the role from von Aroldingen but he didn't want her to dance it with Farrell back in the company either.)
  14. He goes unmentioned in Maestro, which took me aback. I realize Bernstein had a lot of father figures, but still.
  15. I add my thanks, Anthony_NYC. I subscribed. I hope Croce is in good health. I believe she's ninety this year. Funny to think she's only 12 years older than the late Joan Acocella.
