  1. Many thanks, Mikhail, for posting the results.
  2. When a "New Member" reaches "Member" status, s/he has ability to PM and send email from the board, use Member Search, and View New Posts. We've lowered the number of posts that "promotes" New Members to Members; it is now 10. For New Members with <=9 posts, this will change automatically when your substantial post count=10. The board software does not make retroactive changes. I've updated the profiles of current "New Members" who have 10+posts and who have had board activity since 1 January 2005. If you feel that you qualify and I've missed you, please send an email to "ballettalk@hotmail.com" and include your username. If you've been upgraded, you'll be allowed to use the Members search at the top right hand side of the site. To check to see if a change has been made to your account, select the first initial of your board name from the drop-down box in the upper right of the Search page, or fill in your board name in the input box in the bottom left and press "enter." Or, if you find a link to your name, you can click that. Under your name and board "title," you should see "Member Group: Member." A PM mailbox supports 50 emails, including those saved to "Sent Items." Once full, you will no longer be able to receive or send PMs. Since one of the reasons we've activated the PM feature is to be able to reach you if needed, you are responsible for keeping enough space in your PM box for us to PM you on board business. Depending on whether you have a pop-up blocker or your pop-up blocker settings, you may receive a notification at the top of the screen whenever you have an unread PM. The PM "New Messages" count should always be visible in the upper right hand part of the screen. Please check unread PMs in a timely manner. We know the vast majority of Members will act with common sense and good faith, but, unfortunately, we need to be clear: PM, board email, and Member Search may not be used for mass mailings or to harass members, to solicit, or to recruit members to another board. We reserve the right to retract these privileges if abused, up to an outright ban. If you are being bothered or harassed through PM or board email, or you feel you've been sent inappropriate content or suggestions, please PM a Moderator or me.

  5. Your best bet to find answers to career and hiring questions is on our sister site, Ballet Talk for Dancers, most specifically in the Career and Higher Education Planning and Cross Talk forums.
  6. We've developed this new forum to capture your attention about site matters. We've called it "Homeroom," because, as our US and Canadian members know, it is the short period in school where annoucements are made to the entire student body, usually over the intercom. (Maybe I'm dating myself here ) We're also going to be doing a lot of housekeeping this summer, renaming forums, creating new ones, consolidating rules and policies, and adding more information about using the site for new members, with refreshers for our long-term members. And we want you to know about them, so there aren't any surprises. We can't yell into a loudspeaker when you get in in the morning, but we ask that when you come into the site, you glance at the date in the Last Post Info column on the far right. If the forum has a post since the last time you've been in, please click on the All Members link and read through the threads that are marked "unread" (the little orange box to the left of the thread.)
  7. The policy of the board is that links to pages that host downloads may be posted only if they are to Company sites. We have a single photo archive which is a board treasure, and we have budgeted for that bandwidth. As far as attaching small files to the board, it becomes a bandwidth issue if many people post a number of files. That is why it is prohibited to attach files. Our purpose is to discuss ballet performances, news, issues, and, as you've found, music, but distribution of photos and downloads is not our mission. I'm closing this thread now.
  8. I'm not exactly sure when it happened, but I do know the first time I recognized it as an obsession: when I was in graduate school, looking for quarters in sofa cushions so that I could raise $7.00: $2 * $1.25 for the bus, 2* $1.00 for the subway, and $2.50 to stand at the New York State Theater.
  9. Unfortunately, Suzanne Farrell Ballet doesn't have a dedicated official website, but a few pages for the Company, Farrell, and several performers are hosted on the Kennedy Center site. http://www.kennedy-center.org/calendar/ind...d=4965&source=O There are miminal listings of company members in the upper right corner (currently only Farrell herself, Principals Chan Hon Goh, Natalia Magnicaballi, and Runquio Du, and Soloist Sonia Rodriguez, with links to bios.)
  10. I had to remove the link, because our video policy is that only links to official Company sites with videos may be posted. Beyond those sites, we can't be sure if the proper permissions have been obtained to post download links. I sent email to you this morning. If it's not in your Inbox, please check your spam folder, where our emails sometimes land, depending on your ISP.
  11. We've made several changes to the forum, formerly known as "Ballet Videos": 1. All registered members who are logged in may post to this forum. Ballet Videos had been restricted previously to full members only, because tape trading was allowed. Since the main focus of the forum has been to discuss performances, we feel that all members should be able to participate. 2. Tape trading is no longer allowed on this forum. We know that there were legal trades and sales of commercial releases, but we need to be vigilant about copyright infringements, which includes tapes of broadcasts. We will delete any offers or requests for tapes from posts made after today. 3. The name has changed, to describe the expanded scope. This is a place to discuss movies that are mainly about ballet or ballet dancers -- ex: The Red Shoes, Center Stage, The Turning Point, The Company, etc. -- as well as videos, films, and broadcasts of ballet performances. This includes discussion about downloads from Company sites, since these aren't limited by geography. 4. The policy for video downloads from Company sites has a minor change: a. Only links to Company sites that host downloads may be posted; links to the downloads themselves are not permitted. b. You may post either:A link to the homepage, with instructions on how to find the page on which the video download links appear or A link to the page on which the video download links appear. Please note, that these pages may change or be removed from the site, and that instructions in these posts may become obsolete over time.
  12. Many thanks to the people who responded to our fundraiser, both here and on Ballet Talk for Dancers -- and many of you post to both. We have reached our goal, and the annual fundraiser is now closed for the year!

    Darcey Bussell

Drew, What a wonderful appreciation of Bussell's dancing.
  21. I've opened up a new thread here to discuss what is upcoming in Holland and Belgium.
  22. In the thread about the EBU Ballet Competition, Pamela Moberg wrote: From the schedule on the Het Nationale Ballet website, she will be able to see a number of Balanchine ballets, two Robbins ballets, and a Wheeldon ballet (Continuum). There will be pieces by Hans van Manen, Rudi van Danzig, and five choreographers whose work I haven't seen: David Dawson, Martin Schläpfer, Krzysztof Pastor, Toer van Schayk, and Ted Brandsen. There will be a production of Swan Lake by "Rudi van Dantzig, after Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, in collaboration with Toer van Schayk." However, according to the website, "In his choreography, Van Dantzig has retained the surviving parts of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov's original ballet of 1895, in particular the second 'white act' and the spectacular Black Swan pas de deux with its 32 fouettés. The newly choreographed sections, however, have a searing emotional charge. And with his imposing set and costume designs inspired by seventeenth-century Dutch masters, Toer van Schayk contributed in no uncertain way to the overwhelming success of this Swan Lake." Here is the link to the website: http://www.het-nationale-ballet.nl/index.p...ason_next&s=149 The schedule for the Royal Ballet of Flanders is posted on this thread: http://ballettalk.invisionzone.com/index.php?showtopic=19601 Looks like a lot of ballet, with the possible exception of "Uncontainable, April 20: project for young up-and-coming choreographers." The schedule for 2005-6 at La Monnaie in Brussels shows three days of performances by the Bolshoi next February (19-21): two of Giselle and one of an excepts Gala. The rest of the season is booked with Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker's company "Rosas" (modern) and Tanztheater Wuppertal. http://www.lamonnaie.be/demunt-1.0/program...74&seizoen=2005 Does anyone know of any other companies in or planning to visit Holland or Belgium, or anything about the choreographers whose works will be performed by Het Nationale Ballet?
  23. On figure skating boards, there is a custom of starting "I Am An Outcast" threads in the off-season, where people can voice unpopular opinions, because the rules are that there can be statements and no arguments. I'm not suggesting that this happen here, but in responding, I'm thinking I may have to duck!!! Over 30 years ago, Baryshnikov defected to the West, became the exemplar of virtuoso technique, and inspired a generation and a half to increasing technical heights. Baryshnikov's ballet performances, with the exception of his dancing in Twyla Tharp's choreography, have always left me cold, and I think it's because while he was the gold standard of technical prowess, I was never convinced through phrasing or characterization that he was an artist. He was clearly the product of unequalled institutional training and coaching -- the equivalent of being well brought up -- and had the taste to keep his virtuosity from overwhelming the ballets, but, with the few (Tharp) exceptions, I wasn't convinced of a need to convey, which I think is the hallmark of an artist. For me, an artist is someone who, when a young dancer watches and says "I can do that," and performs the same with impeccable technique, classicism, and restraint, he actually can't "do that." (Although, he may very well be on his way.) Bruhn is dancer who is polarizing in this way at one extreme, and to give a current example, it sounds from chiapuris' description of the popular Israeli dancer in the Moscow International Ballet competition, Vladimir Kuklachev, that Kuklachev might be at the opposite extreme.
  24. Thank you lkresge for posting this! The link to the note on the SAB site is: http://www.sab.org/schoolnews.htm There's also a lovely picture of Peter Boal with some of his students, and a short goodbye to him, as well as an announcement that Nikolaj Hübbe will join the SAB faculty in September. Note: I moved this thread from Recent Performances (where the SAB workshop discussion took place) to the NYCB forum, so it would be seen by all NYCB posters.
