  2. I have to remember to re-read my posts at least three times, if it's earlier than 10am Pacific Time. I've edited the original post so that someone doesn't read mine and reply before they see yours.
  3. And "local" can mean very local. Balanchine did not like the music to be interrupted for applause and bows, and while there has always been spontaneous applause at NYCB when a major dancer makes a first appearance in a ballet like Sleeping Beauty -- I've never seen this for Agon or Four Temperaments, for example -- at American Ballet Theatre across the plaza at Lincoln Center, this is much more customary. When Russian touring companies appear in Berkeley, a large portion of the audience is Russian-speaking and observes Moscow/St. Petersburg customs. In Seattle, where there is a much smaller Russian-speaking population, the visiting performers from the Bolshoi must have thought we were zombies
  4. Roach, I'm afraid I can't answer your question about Natalia (yikes) Tatyana Bessmertnova, but I wanted you to know that this is the right forum to discuss ballet videos and to ask questions about them. (And thank you for introducing yourself in the Welcome forum -- you'll receive your official welcome soon!) Although chances are good that someone here will be able to answer, to get a full cast list, you might want to contact the publisher, Arthaus Musik, info@arthaus-musik.com.

    Trig New Look

With a few minutes waiting around this morning, I found that "Paint" gives me a few more options than I thought. I still haven't been able to find a way to make a transparent background or do gradations, but I was able to play with the logo a little bit to blend into the background. There aren't any script types for the "talk," so I tried italic. If anyone has any preferences, please post or PM/email me. Or if there's a way to make a clear background with Paint, I'd appreciate it if someone would tell me.

    Trig New Look

Logo's back. The bad news is that it looks pretty sloppy on the new toolbar, but I don't have any fancy graphics tools right now to create a clear background to blend it into the very cool toolbar. (I'll be working on that.) The good news is that it actually describes who we are. Our logo file got wiped out in the upgrade, but my very technical friend told me about www.archive.org, which has a "Wayback Machine" that accesses the archive of web pages that are at least a year old. I was able to find an old Ballet Talk page, right-click on the logo, "Save File As," and upload this to the board using an nifty new feature. I mention this because he told me that not knowing about www.archive.org was like not knowing about Google -- that's the price of getting info from true techies that you've known since your third day of college -- and I wanted to be sure everyone knew about it, too.
  8. From the article it sounded as if dancers had been contractors until relatively recently, and I doubt they and their union would have supported the initiative to turn the relationship back to contracting if either there is no difference to esprit, or the difference in esprit wasn't worth reverting back. However, I also doubt there is complete consensus on anything economic, and that it is a financial disadvantage to at least a minority, and if there is a difference in esprit, it's likely that there are some dancers who don't think an economic gain was worth it. It will be interesting to see if any of minority views are published.

  19. This ruling was supported by the dancers and by their union, to revert to the original situation, before a different ruling classified dancers as employees. Since all Canadian citizens, residents, and workers have health insurance, this is less draconian that it would be in the US. The money saved in income taxes, which are substantial in Canada, on the now-deductable amounts can be transferred to the Pension and employment plan. Whether this is a wash or to the advantage of the dancers isn't discussed. Perhaps some of our Canadian posters know more about the tax impacts? According to the Canada Pension website contributions to CPP are tax-deductible as well. In 2004, the contribution rate was 9.9%, or twice the individual rate paid by employees (4.95%). That's less than Social Security contributions in the US, and the cap is less than $42,000 in income. There's also a provision for not counting low income years from the pay-out formula, including for taking care of children under 7.
