  1. Many on this site already know this. Others might be interested that the Kirov/Mariinsky was evacuated from Leningrad in 1941 to Perm. This helps explain the great traditions at Perm. https://www.mariinsky.ru/en/about/ww2/1941/
  2. Simkin did Lensky with the Berlin company, so that is still possible.
  3. At the Guggenheim, Chloe rehearsed SL with Forster, but I don't remember if Jaffe said that would be her partner in the debut. Bell will be a great partner for her Met debut.
  4. ABT official announced that China tour is done. So perhaps we'll get news of the Met season soon. PS. Very glad to see that Bell did the scheduled Giselle with Teuscher in China. His only performance there. https://www.instagram.com/p/Czdgcm5LQvR/
  5. I have assumed that when there's news of a contract, it will be plastered all over their social media accounts. But with everybody in China, I'm also assuming nothing will be final until they get back. And I would guess China would not welcome a high-profile celebration of a union contract while they were in China. Ditto for the announcement of the Met 2024 season.
  6. Yosvani Ramos, who retired last spring as a Principal at Colorado Ballet, has just been named Artistic Director of the Ballet de Monterrey: https://www.instagram.com/p/Cze6w8BAO6H/ This fall he has been teaching in England, as well-documented on his Instagram.
  7. The Singapore Ballet staged a festival of Goh's works in 2018. Very recent! Somebody has tapes or scores sufficient to restage them. The clips of "Fives" starts at 0:51. It was my understanding that after Mary Day saw this work (made for DNB) she invited him to Washington. If Washington Ballet wants to get some attention, this would be a great project for them. And I wonder if ABT could get Terry Orr and Marianna Tcherkassky to restage the piece made for Baryshnikov. I can see Camargo and Bell in the lead.
  8. Here's the piece by Goh for ABT and Baryshnikov: Here's a clip of the Baryshnikov interview about the piece, narrated by Shirley MacLaine. Interesting that Baryshnikov commissioned this in 1981, shortly after he took over as ABT Artistic Director:
  9. According to ABTOfficial Stories on Instagram, they made it to Shanghai. I'll be interested in seeing how much sightseeing, etc. they are able to do.
  10. According to Instagram Stories this morning (Boylston, Brandt, Whiteside), ABT dancers have landed in Dubai. It will be fun, thanks to social media, to follow them on this trip.
  11. In Roxander's Instagram Stories, from his economy seat, there is an emergency instruction folder: A380-800: Korean Air Lines. China Airlines and Delta are partners of Korean Air. Go figure!
  12. Push is my dream revival, too. I always thought Daniil would be great in it. There's YouTube footage of Kimin Kim doing it a few years ago with Mariinsky. Presumably Tharp has to approve. Jaffe was in this (replacing van Hamel of the original cast).
  13. We have no way of knowing, of course. I've actually wondered how ABT could afford China at all! A subsidy from the US state department? China? Some national airlines seem to provide air travel for visitors like this, although (again) we have no way of knowing and I haven't seen anything about this kind of support. Just think of the cost of shipping costumes and sets, never mind the dancers!
  14. Trivia of the day: Judging from several Instagram Stories, ABT dancers are now on an 18-hour flight to China. From their postings: corps members fly economy (Roxander) and principals business/first (Cornejo)
  15. There's a backstage Instagram shot of other dancers giving Boren big bouquet and another of her outside on a rainy street with the bouquet.
  16. Disappointing: Woolf Works, SL, R&J. Main hope is Reid Anderson's comment in an interview some time ago that he was staging Onegin for ABT. Fingers crossed!
  17. Alternatively, if you join your local PBS station for one year at $60, it comes with Passport. It's tax-deductible and they have quite a few other dance programs. https://donate.rmpbs.org/rmpbs/passport-pbs
  18. I couldn't stick around to see Program 3. How was it? From Instagram, it looked like the colors of the Ukraine flag were on the back during bows. Ratmansky send a loving greeting to honor Ukraine with the performance of Dnipro.
  19. We frequently see data that ticket sales only provide about 50% of a ballet company's revenue. The rest comes from donors, grants, etc. Those unrestricted grants are probably shoring up the operating budget.
  20. He is actually featured in a rehearsal clip on Facebook but they don't identify him there either! They should!
  21. I would have trouble tracking down the source, but Baryshnikov reportedly spotted Kirkland on that 1972 tour and asked for her when he defected in 1974,.
  22. A few more thoughts on the Gala performances: Sleeping Beauty (Teuscher-Forster): A reminder that they apparently haven't performed this in a long time, if ever. The three fish dives were painfully slow, two-handed, cautious. Romeo & Juliet (Trenary-Royal): It looked like he had serious trouble getting her into the lift where she's parallel to the floor behind his head and shoulders. Swan Lake (Shevchenko-Whiteside): They did White Swan PdD, flanked by corps members. A reminder that he is a very good partner. Good to see him back. Leaves are Fading (Brandt-Ahn): I do wish they would revive this entire ballet. Memories of Gelsey, for whom it was made in 1977, especially with the slightly crooked arms at her side. Danzon No. 2 (Boylston-Bell): He is a great partner for the flamboyant choreography and also did a few turns and jumps. Nothing too strenuous. Whitehead, the choreographer, took a bow and seemed quite happy about it. Concerto (Seo and Stearns): Another great partner. She was lovely. Don Quixote (Hurlin and Camargo): He threw in several revoltades 540. She knocked out the fouettes with ease. Etudes (Murphy, Ahn, Cornejo): They did just the very end, so not much opportunity to show off. Too bad we didn't see Roxander at all this evening, but I suppose they needed something for two long-time stars to appear in. On that medical emergency: I was surprised a theater of this size didn't have some sort of emergency procedure in place - wheelchair, stretcher, some way to get him to the lobby and get medical help. The man seemed to be lying on the floor for a very long time in the aisle in the orchestra, surrounded by friends/family. Then they helped him down the aisle and he collapsed again. I couldn't believe the announcer actually said "Is there a doctor in the house?" I assume it's expensive to keep medical staff on site, but with all the theaters at Lincoln Center, nothing?
  23. "Nearly all NYCB dancers wear Freeds." I don't remember the source, but Balanchine reportedly visited their workshop long ago and decided they were the best for his dancers. https://dancespirit.com/the-secrets-of-new-york-city-ballets-pointe-shoe-room/
  24. Murphy definitely wears Gaynor Mindens. But (judging from some Instagram stories today), Brandt wears Capezio, Boylston Blochs. I think Shevchenko also wears Blochs.
  25. You can look up compensation of top individuals on this ProPublica site, although 2021 is the most recent year: https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/131882106
