No Merkuriev.  That's sad, because he was the best Birbanto in "Le Corsaire" and I'm pretty sure he was on the "Bright Stream" DVD.  (I can't check because I lent out my copy.)

Merkuriev will be in Moscow making his debut in Anyuta. He wasn't filmed in The Bright Stream, which hasn't yet been released on DVD, but he did have the lead in the film of Ratmansky's Bolt, if that's what you're thinking of.

Yes, it was "Bolt."  No wonder I couldn't find my non-existent copy of "The Bright Stream"    (Now I wonder which DVD I did loan out...)

I guess "Anyuta" trumps Birbanto.  But he was sooooooooooo good in it!

Maria Alexandrova seems fairly excited about the prospect of visiting Australia.



My guess is that Merkuriev would have preferred to go to Australia also, and given that he dances both male leads in The Bright Stream, he would have been a good candidate. But on this tour the premium appears to be on Conrads. The biggest change to the basic casting outline that was announced back in February is that Vitaly Biktimirov will not be dancing Pyotr after all, which I think would have been a debut for him. Instead he will be doing most of the Birbantos. Given that Denis Savin already dances Pyotr, it seems entirely sensible to cast him. Savin, though, must make an awfully sweet-tempered Birbanto.

I imagine Brisbane is very nice at this time of the year and not the steam bath it is in January.  Watch out for the pictures of the Bolshoi cuddling koalas, there are bound to be some.

I'm making the 1200km trip to Brisbane next week to see Masha Alexandrova dance on opening night. It's a very expensive overnighter for a student, but I'm not complaining.
