Ostrich
Reading the topic Ballet in Operas made me think about the opposite: how many ballets are there in which opera is included? Personally, I can only think of Mayerling. Are there any others? Link to comment
chrisk217
Does Pulcinella count? There are at least 4 or 5 arias and duets in the score. Link to comment
Helene
In Kent Stowell's production of The Nutcracker, he interpolated the Mozartean pastorale from Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades into the Act I party scene. Three dancers perform a "masque" and re-enact the story of the Nutcracker, Mouse King, and Princess Pirlipat from the original story. (The first is at the beginning of the ballet, when three children in character emerge from "under the stage" of Maurice Sendak's set to enact the story.) Link to comment

Mel Johnson
Don't forget Balanchine's staging of Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice which had the singers in the pit and the dancers handled the action! Link to comment
