Dale
This off-season group, led by Benjamin Millepied, is again performing in London in October: http://www.sadlerswells.com/whats_on/2004_2005/nycb.asp From the website: This is a rare opportunity to see some of today's greatest dancers, in a programme of works by George Balanchine, Peter Martins, Christopher Wheeldon and Benjamin Millepied. This Autumn the 17-strong Danses Concertantes will be performing exclusively at Sadler's Wells. The company is made up of leading dancers from the renowned New York City Ballet, including Maria Korowski, Janie Taylor, Sebastian Marcovici, Wendy Whelan, Jock Soto and Benjamin Millepied, who are 'famous for their exhilarating speed and attack, their no-holds-barred enthusiasm and the clarity and sheer power of their dancing.' - Debra Craine, The Times. Dances Concertantes photo: David Michalek The programme features Balanchines Variations pour une Porte et un Soupir, a visually striking and theatrical work which has previously only ever been performed by New York City Ballet; a world premiere by Millepied, set to New York composer Daniel Ott newly commissioned score; and the UK premiere of Wheeldon s poignant and powerful duet Liturgy, with music by Arvo Pärt. The finale, another UK premiere, is Peter Martin's Hallelujah Junction, a fast-paced, jazzy piece featuring explosive leaps and lightening-speed partnering, to music by John Adams. Link to comment
tantris
Aren't they doing the same ol' show at Lyon the week before? It seems dancers these days are following on the tradition of the 3 tenors! Link to comment
Estelle
No, the program in Lyon is quite different: it includes Robbins' "In the Night" and "Suite of dances", and two sworks by Benjamin Millepied ("Double aria" and a new work). And given that there is very little ballet to be seen in Lyon (the Maison de la Danse and the Lyon Opera mostly show modern dance), I think that's a great opportunity for the Lyon audience to see some good ballet. tantris
Estelle, same group in Lyons as in London? do you have any casting info for Lyons, in other words? Link to comment
Estelle
No, there isn't any detailed info on the casting on the web page of the Maison de la Danse: http://www.maisondeladanse.com/New_version...5/spec/p_12.htm But it seems to say that it will be the same group of ten dancers as in London. oberon
If I hadn't blown so much money going to the US Open last week I would fly to London to see what looks like a great programme...HALLELUJAH JUNCTION is one of Peter Matins' best ballets...talk about FAST...the quartet of corps dancers have short duets crossing the stage that are extremely tricky. Wendy...Jock...Janie...Maria K...um, Benjamin, could you bring this programme to the Joyce, please? Nice to see Alex Ritter's name again, an under-valued dancer during his term at NYCB... Estelle
Thanks, Alexandra ! I'm looking forward to seeing all those dancers (hoping that I can get a seat, because I haven't had enough time to take care of it, and I've just realized that the booking has been open for a while... ) Link to comment
