    Many of the big companies tape some rehearsals and all performances. There are generally several recordings from which to choose, even if the work is not performed again by that company. At the New York Library for the Performing Arts, for example, you can see many performances of the same work on tape. At Pacific Northwest Ballet, taped performances are available in the company Library.

    Alberta Ballet's "Nutcracker" is a relatively new production, choreographed by Edmund Stripe. It's described as being set in Imperial Russia. This year it opens in Ottawa (tour) on 1 December, followed by Edmonton on 10 December and Calgary on 17 December before landing in Vancouver on 29 December.     After watching "Dancing Bournonville" for the fifty-zillionth time, my experience has been that the film dies in the last chapter, with Ralov supposedly coaching Hindberg and Villumsen in "Flower Festival Pas de Deux". It's as if all of the air is sucked out of the room.

    It's so much easier than digging through the entire Met Opera calendar, with all of the Met Talks, receptions, etc. (Beside, living across the continent, I'd rather not see all of the things that are happening without me being there!)
