  3. Many of you noticed the database issues we had last weekend. We can't avoid an upgrade any longer. I should receive email notification when it's about to start, and I'll post here if and when I do, but I've been warned: * For about an hour during the upgrade, the site may return errors. * All of the site modifications we've done, particularly to the links at the top of the page and the registration pages, will be gone until I re-do the new default templates. Here's hoping it's a smooth transition!!

  7. There are few professional and retired professional dancers who post at Ballet Talk. Ballet Talk is a discussion board from the point of view of the audience. It is possible that you will find an answer by reading our sister board, Ballet Talk for Dancers. I'm going to close this thread now.

  11. I didn't realize it was the last show, but the winners are Cheryl Burke and Drew Lachey.
  12. Oy, after a great samba, Stacy Keibler was eliminated from the final three based on the audience vote. Drew Lachey and Jerry Rice are the last two men standing.
  13. I had forgotten about the little dance when Monastatos and his minions were enchanted, which is how Papageno gets to Pamina.
  14. It's not really dance music in The Magic Flute, but there is short orchestra music in the opera during Tamino/Pamina's trials that is dance-like in the Bergmann film. Mozart wasn't writing for Paris, where the ballet-in-opera convention was important.
  15. I didn't make this decision lightly, but I've removed the "Criticize Your Favorite Dancers" thread not because well-reasoned, respectful criticism isn't welcome here, but because a list of one-line, out-of-context criticisms doesn't add to the discussion, particularly when based on video viewing only. This is by no means a criticism of anyone who responded to the thread -- except of me, because I should have removed the thread earlier -- because I think everyone responded thoughtfully and respectfully, and I thank you all for not allowing the thread to go south.

  24. Maybe I'm being a bit too optimistic, but I'm hoping that when the translation of Alexander Meinertz' biography of Vera Volkova is published, that more people will understand how the roots of classical Russian style branched and influenced great dancers of the Royal Ballet and Royal Danish Ballet. Hopefully that will include some dancers.
  25. The reviews in the NYCB forum of Wendy Whelan's performances as The Novice in Robbins' The Cage, reminded me that it was the role in which I saw Whelan in her debut and saw she had "IT": the IT realized, not just the potential to become a great dancer. What roles have you seen dancers in that made you realize they were there, and that their potential had been realized?
