Sara has now been replaced by Ashley Laracey for next week's SPF assignment as well.

For those who've seen the role performed by dancers who aren't really "jumpy spitfire turners" (not necessarily short — though there's often a correlation), have any made a strong case for the casting of the role in this way? Or is it generally those who are cast "to type" that really do best with it?
Tess Reichlen was a great Dewdrop. She isn't a whizbang allegro technician but she has big buoyant jumps and radiated authority.

Here's another interview with Hyltin about SPF.

Wait, per that report Hyltin said the very first performance she had with NYCB was Nutcracker, "... and I danced the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy." The reporter must have gotten something confused.
I won't get to see Nut this year for the first time in quite awhile, so please keep the reports coming! I really enjoy the two lead Flowers, so anyone who takes note of them, I'd love to hear. Also if anyone sees Chun Wai Chan's debut as Cavalier next week - please report!!! Glad to hear that Veyette looks so good!!
I think Hyltin has said in the past that her first "big" role was SPF. She says that the role is very dear to her for that reason.

Here's a NY1 blurb about NYCB and Nutcracker and Sterling Hyltin:
-
I was at Sunday evening's performance. It was absolutely wonderful -- Indiana Woodward might be the best Dewdrop after Tiler Peck. What speed and joy! Sterling Hyltin after all these years is still the warmest, loveliest of Sugarplum Fairies. Andrew Veyette looked in great shape -- best I've seen him in years.
The slightly older kids were more noticeable in the second act. In the first act the party adults are all tall dancers. But in the second act, many of the angels were too tall for their costumes, and only four polichinelles could fit into Mother Ginger (the other four were hidden behind Mother Ginger). Also, the Marie was nearly as tall as Hyltin.
But overall, a lovely performance. Kristen Segin was really great as Marzipan.

what's up with the no intermission? I assume it's a covid thing- but is this being done for other NYC shows, B'way etc? or just an NYBC thing?
There is intermission for Nutcracker.

She's out next week as well -- she's being replaced by Fairchild/Garcia.

This is what I wrote about Phelans Dewdrop on bachtrack:
QuoteThe only disappointment was Unity Phelan as Dewdrop. Phelan is a beautiful dancer with charisma to burn. However, she struggled with the allegro footwork of the Waltz of the Flowers. Her jumps had a floppy quality and did not get very far off the ground. Her turns were effortful and her posture slumped.

Second week of Nutcracker is up:
Am sort of tempted by Unity/Joe/Tiler.

Making statements such as "his behaviour appears to have been egregious and exploitative" is reckless, in my opinion, if the writer can't offer any evidence to substantiate the claim. Scarlett worked with a number of international dance companies (aside from the RB) and I've yet to hear any corroborative evidence from those organizations.
Scarlett was fired by the Royal Danish Ballet for "abusive" and "offensive" behavior with the Royal Danes. That was totally separate from the Royal Ballet.

Those are great seats I'd get them.

There's one thing that's always surprised and even awed me about critics' and audience reactions to Tiler Peck. I can't recall ever reading or hearing any reaction to the shape of her body, the focus is always on the marvel of the way she moves.
I think:
1) Her dancing is simply so overwhelming
and
2) Tiler is a petite dynamo and cast in the allegro roles at NYCB. There's a long history of shorter, more compact dynamos in ballet.
I think if Tiler were to dance Diamonds there might be comments ...

FDA authorized vaccine for kids 5-11.

Vaccine mandates are causing some orchestra members to be fired:

I got the vaccine just to attend NYCB performances, that's actually the only reason. Had a pretty bad reaction, ended up in the hospital. Really hoping boosters aren't required in the future to attend because I don't want to experience that again.
I actually know of people who got vaccinated just to attend a one-off concert so you're not alone.
-
Many dancers have been very outspoken about how they think the lack of vaccinations caused them to be out of work and threatened their livelihood.

The FDA is approving vaccines for 5 to 11 year olds. Hopefully that means more little kids can attend, just in time for Nutcracker season.

I find that with AM it's not what he says, it's also how he says it.
He comes across in this article as super-defensive, when sometimes a simple, straight explanation would do.

At the Mariinsky Albrecht runs into the cottage with a fancy cape and comes out with his "peasant" brown outfit:

David Hallberg used to do the brises very well too.
Nutcracker 2021

For the record I was at Nutcracker last night. I thought Unity and Joe had some partnering problems, including the second shoulder lift. Unity seemed to be slipping on his shoulder. Phelan's sequence of pique-turn-to-arabesque-penchee was a bit wonky too. Tiler Peck's Dewdrop is pretty much incomparable.
