"What is it like to write about a choreographer whose work has mostly disappeared, and which you have to discover through descriptions and programs and correspondence and photos. How did you conjure her ballets in your mind?

There were various sources that were important to me: One was the reviews. In some you really get a sense of the affect, the emotion, the musicality. I kept trying to find dancers’ words and recollections. Sometimes that came through oral histories, sometimes through memoirs."
