pherank
I've always wondered why there wasn't a DVD made of RAkU (and 2 other short ballets). Well, it appears that it has been filmed for posterity, and will be premiered in NYC this summer: Fire and Ashes, Making the Ballet RAkU Shirley Sun, USA, 2017, 60m New York Premiere Set in historic Kyoto, the fictional story of RAkU is based on a true event, the burning of a sacred temple by a deranged monk. Yuri Possokhov’s choreography for prima ballerina Yuan Yuan Tan mingles Japanese Noh theater and elements of Butoh with classical and contemporary ballet styles to create powerful dance drama. The film begins with Russian-born Possokhov and his team making plans over vodka and borscht, then moves into an intense rehearsal process, and culminates in a breathtaking performance by Yuan Yuan and her male partners—Damian Smith and Pascal Molat—as they enact this passionate tale of love and revenge. http:// https://www.filmlinc.org/daily/dance-on-camera-festival-2018-lineup-announced/ Link to comment
pherank
It looks like Frances Chung is guesting with Houston Ballet in Swan Lake, as I write this. And she may have banged her knee during rehearsals which is a shame as she has had to struggle with injuries lately.https://www.instagram.com/p/BkUGqRTgMuJ/?taken-by=franadian I can't find a casting page for HB to find out exactly when she is appearing. It didn't come up when I did a search. Can't say I love how the website is organized and designed. But the SFB site is only marginally easier to find things on (and that's probably because I'm now used to it). Edited June 22, 2018 by pherank Link to comment

sf_herminator
Stern Grove 7/29: The ballet's website has not been updated (https://www.sfballet.org/season/tour), but the Stern Grove website has the afternoon's program posted (http://www.sterngrove.org/july-29-2018/) Serenade, Choreographed by George Balanchine, Music Composed by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky Bluebird Pas De Deux from The Sleeping Beauty, Choreographed by Helgi Tomasson after Marius Petipa, Music Composed by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky Letting Go Pas De Deux from The Infinite Ocean, Choreography by Edwaard Liang, Music Composed by Oliver Davis Tarantella, Choreography by George Balanchine, Music by Louis Moreau Gottschalk Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes, Choreographed by Justin Peck, Music Composed by Aaron Copland (Program is subject to change. Casting is TBA) Interestingly, the first and last pieces are from this season's Program 2. I thought it was wonderful in that the first piece highlighted the women and the second piece highlighted the men. For Tarantella, I am hoping for Angelo and either Frances or Sasha. For Bluebird - fingers crossed for Wona Park and Wei Wang. Link to comment
pherank
Good news: Mathilde Froustey mentioned that she will be dancing with Jospeh Walsh at the Napa Festival, so Joe is apparently cleared to perform.
