Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good recording of Khachaturian's Gayane? Ideally, I'd like to get a cd that contains all 3 suites.

Thanks!

I actually just purchased the only recording of the complete "Gayane" (I think its the only one?) . It also contains the suite from Spartacus. I dont know of any recording though that contains all three of the suites from Gayane. Heres a link to the complete CD on amazon -

There used to be a more idiomatic and complete recording of Gayaneh on Russian Disc, by the USSR Radio and TV Large Symphony Orchestra under Djansug Kakhidze from the lates 1970's - probably no longer available.

If you want a good sounding and thrillingly played selection of highlights from the ballet (coupled with Spartacus) I would advise Evgeni Svetlanov and the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra on Le Chant du Monde label.

Thank you, Marc. I ordered the Svetlanov recording.

The complete recording on CD is occasionally available from Amazon and others. I have one and it is striking. Djansug Kakhidze, and the USSR Radio and TV Large Symphony Orchestra in 1976. You should get one. There are several recordings of the same performance on Russian Disc, VOX, Mobile Fidelity, etc.

I also have a very rare complete LP set of the ballet by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra conducted by Dudarova. I just received it and have not played it yet. 1987

SEarch under all of the names: Gayne, Gayeneh, Gayane

The complete score varies with revisions by the composer so it can be 48 to 54 movements. I have the full piano score. It is almost up there with Swan Lake in music, not in choreography.
