Joseph
Is that from Sleeping Beauty? Link to comment
rg
yes, this is a historic photo of Act 3's Pas Berrichon or "Tom Thumb, His Brothers, and the Ogre" - it's reproduced, among other places, in M. Constantinova's SPYASHAYA KRASAVITSA (a monograph in russian on THE SLEEPING BEAUTY). the author indentifies the 'ogre' in this photo as M. Obukhov, who assumed the role sometime after the ballet's premiere, when it was performed by Aleksei Dmitrievich Bulgakov. (Obukhov would have been only 12 years old during the ballet's premiere year, so if konstantinova is correct in noting the identification of obukhov this photo post-dates the premiere by a number of years - M. Obukhov was Pavlova's partner in the first (1907) version of fokine's CHOPINIANA. his presence in this 'senior' character role here may mean this photo dates from sometime later, maybe even the post-1914 version when the ballet was redesigned by korovin.
