charlieloki
re: orpheus kistler, martins, la cour: at first i thought i was misreading this casting, but no, that's it, and for all three performances what an interwoven family group, quite bizarre stepmother, stepson: we've seen too much of this -- it's at the very least, silly not to mention the fact that martins is totally unsuited for this part and is a mere shadow of his father in it i will go to all the performances, since i love the piece, but i am disgusted with this casting i believe balanchine said something like: well, if you don't like the dancing, just enjoy the music the stravinsky music is gorgeous, so i guess that's what i'll do frown, frown, frown Link to comment
E Johnson
re: orpheuskistler, martins, la cour: at first i thought i was misreading this casting, but no, that's it, and for all three performances what an interwoven family group, quite bizarre Maybe someone needs to remind them it’s Orpheus, not Phaedra. Seriously, though, why must Martins be the only Orpheus, as he has been for years? The role does not play to his strengths, and one can easily name other principal dancers who are much more suited to it: Boal, Evans, and Hubbe seem to be more obvious choices just off the top of my head, and I'd even like to see Soto get a shot at it rather than just the Dark Angel. Or among the soloists, Gold or Liang would be preferable. Link to comment
Leigh Witchel
Boal. Oooh. I've wanted him to do it for years. That would be an Orpheus that looped right back to Monteverdi. Link to comment
tempusfugit
Maybe someone needs to remind them it’s Orpheus, not PhaedraLOLOL! Perhaps they've slightly confused it with Electra , as well... Yes. Boal, Evans, Hubbe, maybe even Fayette. couldn't agree more about the miscasting, and the thought of Eurydice as an old lady role, not too demanding, for the aging ballerina, is not appetizing, either... admire Kistler but...... charlieloki
ok, if boal were orpheus: there is no resident karin von aroldingen, so who could be eurydice? who is there who could bring us to tears, as karin did? take a big chance on a corps member? perhaps faye arthurs? suggestions, anyone? E Johnson
Nichols did it for the 50th anniversary season, and I think she still could. Link to comment
oberon
I assume LaCour is replacing Askegard, who seems to be injured...he did so in BARBER last week. I saw ORPHEUS once and didn't like it, so I'm not going. But Jenifer Ringer might be a good Eurydice...think of her in OPUS 19 or IN THE NIGHT. She's not just a pretty face. Or...Janie Taylor... carbro
Wendy Whelan can do anything, I am thorougly convinced, and I see her as a wonderful Eurydice. Link to comment
charlieloki
i respectfully disagree, although i am a definite wendy fan wendy has done orpheus, along with nilas martins, and the emotional quotient of this casting in this piece approached zero previously, i had posted that if martins were again cast, my season would be ruined well, this has now happened i will survive on memories of karin von aroldingen and p. martins, and simply enjoy the incredible stravinsky and noguchi elements Link to comment
