THANK YOU! I love this. I know a few people are disappointed there weren't more promotions, but the news AS IT IS, brings tears of joy to my eyes, even days after the events. There is something about promoting dancers in small groups, particularly to principal, that allows each of them to shine and have their moment of ascendancy. Unity Phelan and Indiana Woodward are really coming into their own, developing their artistry and becoming ballerinas with an indelible, individual mark on the art form, an individual point of view and approach to the repertory. My opinion is that the recognition would be reduced if they were promoted in a group of 15 or even six. It would seem less like a crowning moment. All three dancers have made a mark on the NYCB repertory and have been cast up above their pay grade consistently since well before the pandemic.

Seriously, I've got tears of joy for all involved! Those are few and far between in these days.

    Hear hear!

My mistake. Kikta is dancing Western Symphony, last movement. Gerrity is doing Serenade, Phelan is in Glass Pieces. Those are the roles Kowroski typically danced where others seem to have moved up.

All the more reason to start promoting these dancers in rank, too!  Gerrity and Phelan have proven themselves ready to be named principals; Kikta has certainly proven herself ready for soloist ranking!

  3. This quote from the plaintiffs' attorney is just heartbreaking:

    Quote

Sigrid McCawley, a lawyer representing the two plaintiffs, said that there is a trend of predation in the dance world because of ingrained power dynamics and the desire on the part of dancers to gain approval from authority figures.

“Grooming in that environment is particularly easy for a perpetrator,” she said, “because he has full access to very young victims for long periods of time.”

Seeing this story at the same time that we're watching the US women's gymnasts onscreen -- just feeling sick for these vulnerable kids.

  4. Ashton Edwards has announced that they’ll be joining PNB in November as an apprentice, with the intention of performing both “female” and “male” roles.  https://www.instagram.com/tv/CQXA_XEAO28/?utm_medium=copy_link

PNB has also announced the same on their Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ3vHARgijN/?utm_medium=copy_link

I had similar thoughts about the DaaG excerpt, actually. (And I teared up as well!)

Me three — have heard company members talk about their “home” before, but it finally clicked for me this time, and it was really moving!

Loved the way the whole setup moved us from studio to full-color stage.  Fits in well with the sense of reawakening all around (in springtime, no less!) as we start to return to society.  Can’t wait to be a live audience member again.

And I can’t believe how great the dancers’ technique looks after a year of working in their living rooms.  Tiler Peck remains an astonishment!

Here would be my dream artistic team:

    • Stella Abrera and Sascha Radetsky as artistic directors.
    • Irina Dvorovenko as an additional coach for the principal ballerinas. (Sorry to be a downer but Irina Kolpakova will be 88 years old this year.)
    • Someone of a Royal Ballet vintage to coach the Ashton and MacMillan works (and replace Georgina Parkinson, who the company never replaced adequately.)
    • John Gardner and Amanda McKerrow (through their work with the Antony Tudor Trust) to safeguard and revitalize the Tudor repertory.
    • Alexei Ratmansky to keep doing what he's doing.

By writing that, I'm sure I have just jinxed the possibility!

Your lips (or keyboard, I guess?) to God’s ears!

Yes. I can barely stand to think about it.

Also, all of these dancers losing two years out of their short careers (I don’t consider their digital seasons to be equal). It’s devastating.

I agree with what someone wrote above - ABT should be showing us some classical pas with current couples or dancers who are quarantining together. New work is great, though I haven’t watched it yet, but it would be exciting and some food for the soul to see some great pas.

Oh, could you imagine what they could do with an “ABT Bubble”?

You're welcome, ksk04. I can't get that tune out of my mind. It's followed me back home from Costa Mesa.

It's way too early to speculate on when the NYC theatres - all US theatres? - will reopen but, gosh, I hope that the ABT and NYCB spring/early summer seasons take place. Surely we'll all be back to normal then? At least the US hasn't had it as bad as my country (Italy) or China.

Things are looking pretty rough here in New York, and I think a lot of us are starting to come to terms with this going on for longer than 2 months.  I’d be really surprised if the shows are back on in any “normal” way.
