  1. You know, it's funny but now that you mention it, with a few exceptions at the matinee (a cougher, a cell phone that went off and then rang about 10 times before it was shut off, plus a gaggle of what appeared to be ballet students sitting just behind me who found it necessary to express their opinion about everything and everybody throughout; ballet schools should teach their students not just how to dance on stage, but how to behave in the audience ), you're right: it was an attentive audience, although they certainly expressed their appreciation full voice at the end. I have a ticket for Sunday, the 13th, and I hope circumstances permit me to go (sick kitty at home, although he survived my being away Saturday, so I'm hopeful). I especially want to see Froustey in Van Patten's role in Symphony #9. And I want to see Messmer again in anything (I think she'll be doing the Chamber Symphony): what a beautiful dancer she is.
  2. Saw the same ballets at the matinee and evening performances with identical casts at both performances, and the second viewing was every bit as fresh and surprising as the first, just a few hours earlier. What a pity we won't be seeing the entire trilogy next season.
  3. In addition: In Giselle the Peasant pas de deux is a Peasant pas de cinq (two men, three women) with an added variation for the female soloist. The music, according to the extremely small print in the program: "Peasant Pas de Cinq: traditional interpolation of music by Freidrich Burgmuller, Ladies (sic) variation: "Shepherd's Return" from 18 Etudes de Genre for piano solo, orchestrated by Emil de Cou...". I'm guessing this is the female soloist variation, because I don't remember the music from any of my DVDs of Giselle. But if it's 'traditional', then it must be there. Can anyone clarify? In Don Q, there's an added pas de deux for Kitri/Basil in the gypsy scene (if memory serves; please correct if I'm wrong). I'm no musician, so don't know rhythms, but I think it's a tango. Don't know about the music, but it's an enjoyable little extra.
  4. 2015 season has been announced. Link to the brochure. All kinds of juicy stuff. I really think they should just program Serenade every season; can’t get enough of that one. Also looking forward to the Forsythe and van Manen, plus Dances at a Gathering, which I’ve never seen. Since Mathilde Froustey has expressed her love of dancing Kitri, maybe we can hope she’ll still be here for Don Q. Do whatever you need to do to see Sarah Van Patten in R&J: she owns Juliet. Note Program 3, a new work by Myles Thatcher, member of the SFB corp de ballet. He has created a couple of well-regarded ballets for the school performances; a premiere for the main company is a big step. Program 1: Serenade/Balanchine Raku/Possokhov Lambarena/Caniparoli Program 2: Giselle Program 3: The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude/Forsythe Variations for Two Couples/ van Manen World Premiere/Thatcher Kingdom of the Shades/Makarova staging Program 4: Dances at a Gathering/Robbins Work premiered in 2014/Scarlett Program 5: Don Quixote/Tomasson/Possokhov Program 6: Continuum/Wheeldon World Premiere/Possokhov Piano Concerto #1 (from the triple bill)/Ratmansky Program 7: Caprice/Tomasson Pas de deux from Concerto/MacMillan Les Lutins/Kobborg The Four Temperaments/Balanchine Program 8: Romeo & Juliet/Tomasson
  5. Opening night cast for Program 6. (Unfortunately, casts are no longer being listed separately by program: if two programs are running concurrently -- as Program 6 and Shoshtakovich Trilogy are -- you have to wade through both to find the day/program you want. Complaints have been made.) It’s good to see Gennadi Nedvigin back onstage. 6. Were these the roles she danced at ABT? If not, which ones did she perform?
  7. Casting is up for the entire run. Plenty of Messmer and Froustey! I am a little curious about the casts for April 5: exactly the same for the 2:00 and 8:00 performances. I've got tickets to both because it seemed likely that there would be at least a few differences between casts on the same day. Odd. 8. We must be doppengangers or something: I had tickets for both Saturday, 3/15 performances, but one of my cats took ill Friday evening and I spent all day Saturday shuttling between the cat doctor and the pet hospital. I saw Cinderella last year (Chung/Ingham/Yamamoto); liked it a lot but didn't overall love it. Mostly, I loved the stage effects (Basil Twist's wonderful tree, the carriage at the end of Act 1, the line up trying on the glass slipper). I'm particularly sorry to have missed Kochetkova, who would be ideal for the role. I'm sure it will be back, though. Hope your little guy is doing better. Mine went back in the hospital last night, but they think he'll be OK; it just might take a while. Peggy
  9. A performance of Cinderella has been added on March 21 at 8 pm. Cast: FRIDAY, MARCH 21—8PM CINDERELLA Choreographer: Christopher Wheeldon Composer: Sergei Prokofiev Conductor: Ming Luke Cinderella: Sarah Van Patten Prince: Tiit Helimets Edwina: Elizabeth Powell Clementine: Ellen Rose Hummel Benjamin: Myles Thatcher
  10. I do have a prediction though: that the upcoming Tomasson world premiere will be created on Froustey, Tan (naturally), and, depending on the number of dancers, he may use Powell from the Corps de Ballet as a soloist. So we shall see if my instincts are good... Probably pretty good bets. I’m hoping Froustey will have plenty to do in the Ratmansky Trilogy, plus likely she’ll be in Suite en Blanc. In the interview linked over on her thread, she said she wanted to dance a lot, and here we are half-way through the season and she’s done two Giselles, and a few minutes in the Kingdom of the Shades. Not exactly ‘a lot of dancing’.

  12. Josette: i started a thread a couple of weeks ago, Dancers to Watch, and Julia Rowe was on the list. She has such a beautiful softness, and yet Saturday she danced a very athletic 2nd couple in Tears. I love seeing these young dancers revealing their sometime unexpected qualities.
  13. SATURDAY, MARCH 1—2PM TEARS Choreographer: Val Caniparoli Composer: Steve Reich Conductor: Martin West Couple 1: Shannon Rugani, Ruben Martin Cintas Couple 2: Julia Rowe, Shane Wuerthner Couple 3: Isabella DeVivo, Steven Morse Although I’m far from an expert on the subject, I’ve always liked what minimalist music I’ve heard. If you let yourself sink into it without distractions there are subtle rhythms, delicate shifts in the sound that can be very beautiful. I don’t think Caniparoli made much use of those subtleties, and his choreography (but not the music) quickly became a little monotonous. Not a good sign when the choreography becomes a distraction. Good performances from the second cast. FROM FOREIGN LANDS Choreographer: Alexei Ratmansky Composer: Moritz Moszkowski Conductor: Martin West Russian: Julia Rowe, Jaime Garcia Castilla Frances Chung, Vitor Luiz Italian: Esteban Hernandez, Sarah Van Patten, Elizabeth Powell, Shannon Rugani German: Simone Messmer, Sean Orza*, Luke Willis, Steven Morse Spanish: Frances Chung, Esteban Hernandez, Sarah Van Patten, Vitor Luiz Polish:Simone Messmer, Julia Rowe, Shannon Rugani, Elizabeth Powell Jaime Garcia Castilla, Sean Orza, Luke Willis, Steven Morse Silly fun. Ratmansky keeps it mostly light hearted, with Simone Messmer bringing lush beauty to ‘German’, and Esteban Hernandez cheerfully flinging himself through ‘Italian’. BORDERLANDS Composer: Joel Cadbury and Paul Stoney Choreographer: Wayne McGregor Sasha De Sola, Sean Orza Sarah Van Patten, Tiit Helimets Kristina Lind, Luke Willis Dores Andre, Daniel Deivison-Oliveira Koto Ishihara, Henry Sidford Jaime Garcia Castilla Elizabeth Powell, Francisco Mungamba Skipped this one. It was interesting to see once, but I don’t feel any compelling need to see it again. Giselle it’s not.
  14. Did you go to the Meet the Artist interview with soloist Luke Ingham before the performance? The interviewer asked him to talk about The Shades scene, he said something about how glad he was he didn’t have to go first down that ramp and do 38 arabesques, and then he said, ‘Poor Lizzie…’, so it might be her. That’s not an unusual reaction to either Tan or Zahorian. Be sure you never make even the mildest of negative comments about either of them: you’ll never hear the end of it. I liked Tan’s Firebird too. Very exotic and fragile in contrast to Messmer’s more full-blooded character: and egret compared to an eagle.
  15. After seeing the Kingdom of the Shades on Friday, 2/28, I have to say that the corps de ballet fully redeemed itself: All arabesques made it off the floor, although they were still somewhat uneven in height; balances were good both on and off the ramp; a much more coherent performance. Well done!
  16. Josette: It's interesting to hear from the other side of the footlights; thanks for your input. Although I criticized the corps, it's only because they have already set the bar high with their beautiful performances of Giselle, so I was disappointed. It's good for the company to dance something like this that doesn't sit as easily on them: I'm sure they learned a lot that will carry over into other ballets. I had hoped to see Froustey as Nikiya too, although at a guess, maybe she's more of a Gamzatti. I certainly wanted to see her in something more than one 90 second variation! I'm going tonight for Kochetkova/Matvienko in The Shades, plus the bonus of Feijoo, who should bring something interesting to Ghosts, and Tan in Firebird. OK, back to work.
  17. That’s very sad news. My condolences to her family and friends at home and here on BalletAlert.
  18. It's too bad you missed her Giselle: different and interesting. Not fully polished yet, especially Act II, but the emotion was there. I'm certainly no expert, and I haven't seen all that many ballerinas in the role, but I can't imagine anyone better in the first act.
  19. That's right in the middle of the Cinderella run at SFB. I was hoping she would dance the title role, or at least one of the sisters; I think she'd be terrific in any of those parts. Sensible to be cooperative and stay on good terms with her 'home' company, I guess.
  20. Program 3, February 22, 2 pm Kingdom of the Shades from La Bayadere (Makarova staging) Negatives: Too many wobbles and too many half-completed arabesques down the ramp; too many poorly maintained balances after the ramp; a Nikiya (Frances Chung) who, aside from missing the third pirouette with the scarf, danced with technical security but without delicacy or flavor. Positives: An ardent Solor (Vitor Luiz) who relied on clean, musical dancing instead of tricks, and three charming Shades (Froustey/André/de Sola). It surprised me that the corps was so off-kilter. I saw them in four Giselle performances at the beginning of the season and they very good. But in the Shades scene there was no sense of breathing together, or of the corps as a coherent whole, and if the corps can’t provide that, the ballet fails. Ghosts (Wheeldon) I haven’t seen that many Wheeldon ballets, but aside from Within the Golden Hour, the ones I have seen left me somewhat underwhelmed. Ghosts still underwhelms, but this time I appreciated his response to the attractive music (C.F. Kip Winger), and Wheeldon’s sometimes striking images - prone bodies creating patterns that translate into interesting movement patterns. As usual, Sofiane Sylve left little room on stage for anyone else. She’s such an enveloping performer, you can almost feel the air move when she moves. Firebird (Possokhov) I know a lot of people don’t like this version (the woman sitting next to me flounced out at the intermission before Firebird started assuring me she would never sit through ‘that mess’ again). Being something of a mess myself, I rather like it. Possokhov’s take provides some comic moments (the in-place chase, Koschei’s affection for his egg), and he turns the Princess (Dores André, adorable as usual) into a diva who shoves her girlfriends to the floor when she doesn’t get her way, and the Prince (Rubén Martín Cintas, likable as usual) into a bit of a lady killer, both of them redeemed by their mutual affection. The performances were all fine, with a standout turn by Daniel Deivison-Oliveira as Koschei. Deivison-Oliveira has a wonderfully expressive upper body and he can act and he’s funny; he pretty much stole the show. The main interest, of course, was Simone Messmer’s debut as the Firebird. Her performance reinforced my initial impression of her dancing as plush and luxurious, with big, generous movements - not on the scale of Sylve, but she may get there. Her upper body and long arms are very beautiful, and she threw off some gorgeous, on-a-dime fouettés: she’s definitely giving me an Odette/Odile vibe.
  21. I'm seeing her at the Saturday matinee. Based on what I've seen so far, it seems like a good role for her. Also looking forward to seeing Froustey as the first shade, but I'd interested to see her as Nikiya, too. I'm going to be seeing the Tuesday night show with Denis Matvinko - I wanted to see Yuan Yuan as the Firebird, and Froustey in Bayadere. Should be fun. ;) I'd like to hear what you think about Matvienko. It seems a little odd bringing in a guest artist when SFB is slightly top heavy with male principals. Here's his bio from the Mariinsky website where he's listed as a 'guest soloist'.
  22. An interview with Val Caniparoli, choreographer of Tears, world premiere on Program 2. Includes a video with some short performance clips.
