I think it's up to you to decide what to do, but I definitely wouldn't throw them out. After all, perhaps there is someone out there just dying to see that performance... Who knows... You could donate them to a local library or a ballet school. That way, you would get rid of the videos, but could still access them if you needed to.

I've seen all those snippets and full performances that Hans and FauxPas are mentioning... I wonder where the actual whole performances that the snippets are taken from exist. In archives? Can the public gain access?
-
And what about all the ballets that are in the Russian Vaults -- you see bits of old film on those wonderful Glory/History/Magic of tapes, but where are the full versions?
Hope the DVD makers are reading this!
I'm right there with you! Some old videos are unlikely to exist of the whole performance, but what about those snippets that seem to have decent quality? Such as the Nutcracker with Lezhnina and Zelensky. Was there an entire performance? Where is it?? Also, the snippet from Giselle with Asylmuratova and Ruzimatov? Where? I could find so performances that I'd like to see entirely... Oh well if the quality isn't too good... Sorry, I got a little excited there...

Or perhaps we could create such a list on this board?

I think an important component to whether one enjoys this or not is how it is performed. If the dancers do it as if they're robots, and just keep repeating, of course it's boring! But watching the Kirov entrance always places me in a state of trance...Each penchee is so short, and I love the music, so only by the end I'm satisfied. That said, I agree with the way everyone else explained it -- mesmerizing, hypnotising...

Thanks for the clarification; I did see two Bolshoi Raymonda DVDs .
-
OK, I won't . (But it was a TV-show, not a broadcasting of commercially released tapes).
-
Kirov version of Raymonda? On video? Where?

Larissa Lezhnina seems to stand out to me (though I have never seen her live). She always seems to be just a bit behind the actual beat and gives her dancing a very special quality, a more sophisticated rhythm...
-
Actually, a friend of mine gave a tape-full of video clips taken off of TV. I don't think most of them have been released commercially. Is there any way to upload videos onto the computer? (sorry it's a bit off topic)

There is a video clip out there with Timofeeva and Lavrovskiy in the last act of Bayadere.

In "ABT at the Met-- Mixed Bill", she performs a MacMillan piece called Triad. It is a contemporary pas de trois with Robert LaFosse and Johan Renvall. I believe (from studying the back of my video case) that the video was released in 1984.
That's it! Thank you .

Somewhere there is a video tape with McKerrow in a contemporary ballet piece... I don't remember the name. I'll post it when I get a chance to look at my list of videos, or if someone remembers it sooner.
-
A bit off topic, but what recordings of Pas de Quatre exist out there? I have the one with Mezentseva, Evteeva, Komleva, and Kolpakova.
-
I was just wondering if there is a list somewhere online of all the ballet VHS and DVDs that exist.
-
I think these are the tapes (though VHS, not DVD) with Darcey in Agon carbro was talking about...
*oops, edit: I just looked at the tapes on Amazon again and noticed that they're out of stock. Sorry!

Personally, pointe shoe "clicking" doesn't disturb me, and at times I have to say that I enjoy it. However, there's a difference between just noisy pointe shoes vs. "bams" when someone lands hard. When a landing from a jump is heavy *and* the shoes make noise -- that is a bit annoying, but pointe shoes alone, as long as they're musical, seem fine to me.

Yes, she does dance in the Sleeping Beauty with Kolpakova. I just forgot about that one!
If you're interested in more precise descriptions of where else she appears: in The Stone Flower as a jewel (in a yellow costume, Lezhnina is next to her). In Sleeping Beauty (can't remember which one) she's one of the court ladies. In Don Quixote -- in "The Dream," one of the three purple dryads, as well as in the "wedding" as one of the guests. You can see her in Backstage at the Kirov as well.

Elena Vorontsova danced in the Kirov/Mariinsky for many years, and if you watch videos of Kirov performances carefully, you'll notice her in the corps de ballet quite frequently. She also performed soloist roles...Such as one of the 4 ladies in La Bayadere at the wedding (in the white fluffy tutus -- sorry for the poor description). She is in Le Corsaire (in the corps de ballet), Swan Lake, Don Quixote, Esmeralda (with Evteeva and Aliyev I think) and numerous other performances. When I went to 3 Mariinksy performances in 2002, in the booklets, she was mentioned as a coach.

Thank you for the information...I would venture to ask, but she's probably quite busy... .
Maybe someone else will have more information...

In the movie "Children of Theater Street," at the graduation performance, there is one dancer that is named Tatiana Podkopayeva. She dances beautifully, and the narrator says that she is a very promising ballerina. However, I have not heard anything about her, and couldn't find anything on Google. Does anyone have information?
-
If anyone finds it, let me in on the scoop too!
-
Terekhova appears briefly in the famous documentary film about the Vaganova Academy, 'The Children of Theater Street.' She's the unnamed soloist seen practicing multiple fouettes on-a-dime.
Perhaps I have forgotten something, but I don't recall Terekhova doing fouettes in 'Children of Theatre Street.' Terekhova did do fouettes in 'Backstage at the Kirov.'

Because it's so minor, I would avoid jumping to conclusions. It's just what it is. We don't have any personal information, and since she is dancing well, I don't think it would be something serious.

I found a video clip of the Kirov's Sleeping Beauty on the Kennedy's Center website. However, it does not play. You were probably talking about something else?
