  1. Some background biographical info: Svetlana Efremova was born on 11/24/1946. She studied at Vaganova Academy, in the class of N. Belikova. Efremova danced in the Kirov from 1966 to 1992.

I believe that Efremova is also on another video somewhere.. I'll post if I remember where :).

  2. A bit , but also,

There's Assylmuratova doing the ballerina variation on Backstage at the Kirov, (unless I am fuddled), and she completely nails it.

It is actually in "The Leningrad Legend" narrated by Makarova.

 I admit to be guilty of watching Assylmuratova in this tape almost every day...

She is indeed absolutely pure in this excerpt.

Elena Pankova, in another excerpt from Paquita on the same video is also a delight to watch. :D

  3. I have just watched the DVD as well... Since I haven't seen any other Kirov dancers in these ballets, I can't really compare, but still, I thought that the video was definitely worth having.

In Sheherazade, Zakharova's lines were gorgeous. Perhaps it was not THE "warmest" dance, but it was really enjoyable to watch. In 'Spectre', Kolb had a nice, sweet "aroma".

I just wish more videos would be published!

  4. Tatiana Terekhova -- the line of her jumps is always beautiful. The lines of her dancing, for that matter.

Maya Plisetskaya -- oh, yes! No need for further explanation :).

    Farukh Ruzimatov, Igor Zelensky.

  5. Oh, yes, those special effects in Sleeping Beauty are so annoying. What, is the audience going to be bored? Well, if they're bored they can fast-forward. No need to ruin the wonderful part with special effects. Also, in POB Bayadere, when one of the shades was dancing (can't remember which one), instead of showing the end of the variation, the corps de ballet was shown. :D

  6. I'm not sure if there is a forum for Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo...

I just watched their program 2 video for the hundredth time in the past month.. They're incredible! Very humorous, the parodies are great, and all at the same time their dancing is wonderful too. I'm probably going to buy the program 1 for the holidays. Are there any other videos? Or has anyone videotaped any broadcasts off of TV?

  7. I'm sorry that I can't contribute much to this question, but I do have to say that personally, I don't really like the eye patch either.

I have seen some performances where Drosselmeyer doesn't wear the eyepatch. For example, in the Kirov Nutcracker, with Lezhnina and Baranov, recorded in 1993 or 1994, Drosselmeyer doesn't wear it. If I remember correctly, neither does the Drosselmeyer in the Maksimova and Vasiliev performance in 1978.

  8. Sorry if I'm a bit clueless  , but this is what I understood:

"Alas, the 'Magic of Russian Ballet' boxed set from Universal/Phillips is simply a re-packaging of three already-released DVDs in the Universal/Decca/Phillips catalogue: Return of the Firebird (the Andris Liepa project of 1993); Kirov's Soviet 'Nutcracker' starring Lezhnina; and the 'Essential Ballet' compilation."

That is just putting together several recordings into one DVD package?

"Amazon.com now lists a DVD entitled "The Kirov Celebrates Nijinsky", which seems to be Scheherezade/Firebird/Polovtsian Dances/SPectre DVD that Natalia thought was initially being released in the Oct 12 boxed set. This DVD is scheduled for release in the United States on January 25, 2005, with an extremely attractive list price of $19.99 (Amazon is currently selling it on pre-order for 13.99).

From the Dance Books description: "Filmed at the Chatelet Theatre in Paris in 2002, the casts of these four Michel Fokine ballets include Svetlana Zakharova and Faroukh Ruzimatov (Sheherazade), Zhanna Ayupova and Igor Kolb (Le Spectre de la Rose), and Diana Vishneva and Andrei Yakovlev (The Firebird)." A nice DVD to have indeed."

Another DVD that is about to come out? With recent performances of the above-mentioned people?

    Thanks for clarifying! :dunno:
