  1. I wonder how Mr Taras took Mariinsky's decision to stage what is patently Symphony with jewel-toned costumes in the 1990s.

He was personally involved in that staging. Strangely enough, though he insisted that the POB could not dance Palais, but only Symphony in C in black and white costumes, he apparently had no objections to the Mariinsky's costumes. I remember seeing a Russian TV feature from the premiere, at which he was present and spoke glowingly of the company. He also approved Tatiana Terekhova as repetiteur of the piece, even though she'd never danced it, and a few years later she staged the ballet for the Bolshoi, though they performed it in (rather tinselly) black and white costumes.

I found pictures of the Mariinsky's version, the color schemes didn't extend to corps:

  2. They are performing on Sat evenings. Sat Jan 17 evening is Cinderella, and Sat evening Jan 24 is Chopin bill. There are no Sat matinee shows, probably because they need to change the scenery from the Swan Lake performances on the 2 Friday evenings. It would have been better if they had done a full week of SL with no interruption of any Cinderella performances, and then done the mixed bill and Cinderella during the second week. I think Gergiev may have wanted to conduct the SL opening and the Cinderella opening, and those were the days he was available. I don't think Gergiev is conducting all the performances.

It is pretty amazing that BAM never bothered to send out any notice to ticketholders, subscribers and so on of the added shows. I get emails from BAM on a regular basis about all kinds of things, but no email re the added Mariinsky shows.

Amour, Lopataina was scheduled for the 24th originally.

Still no casting for the Jan 20 Cinderella.

I meant there're no Sat. matinee shows. Do they really need that much time for a set change? Met can field 2 productions on Sat. matinee and evening. Mariinsky's SL set is not that complicated, it's all fly flats.

  3. You have to wonder about the planning, as they keep adding, bit by bit, additional performances.

I only found out about the additional shows here, you think BAM would send emails to members, subscribers, and all those who have bought tickets about the new shows. I and my friends didn't receive any alerts from BAM.

There were many gaps in the original schedule, now that they added Jan 20 & 25, I am still wondering whey they don't perform on Sat. evenings.

  4. What surprises me the most is that Ratmansky made virtually no revisions (at least to my eyes) over the years. I feel like the first act is pretty good, with the Snowflakes being a big highlight, and I really like many of Ratmansky's storytelling decisions (e.g., having adult dancers in the Nutcracker and Clara roles.) However, the second act feels decidedly unmagical -- from the spare sets to the bland character dances. And it seems like pretty much no one is a fan of adult Clara's peek-a-boo moment or her Vegas wedding bridal veil. The production has so much potential, and I just wish Ratmantsky would have reinvested some creative energy into tweaking the second act.

As for the poor ticket sales this year, I suspect most locals who wanted to see this production have already seen it. And if you're not a balletomane, you probably see no need to go back year after year. And I certainly agree with others that Lincoln Center has more of a tri-state draw than BAM does.

I think you hit the nail on the head re ticket sales, fondoffouttes. I happen to like this Nutcracker very much but even I have not attended every year. I think I went 2 years in a row then took a break then went back last year. I would have probably taken a break this year too had it not been their final season. I know this may be heresy but I'd grown a bit bored with the Balanchine Nutcracker and haven't attended in years, although I do have a recording that I'll watch just to see Bouder as Dewdrop. And I whole heartedly admit that a holiday trip to Lincoln Center for Nutcracker is much more magical than a trip to BAM.

9 of the 13 performances sold out, so don't understand where all the talks of poor box office coming from. And I paid full price for all of mine. I am sad to see this production left NY, hopefully it'll return in a few years. I quite like the setting of BAM, it has a neighborhood feel, surrounded by historical districts, and with all the restaurants, cafes, and shops just short strolls from the theater. The story could have set in one of those brownstones in the neighborhood.

  5. Anyway the DVD isn't listed on amazon.ca but there's nothing to stop us Canadians from ordering it from amazon.com. mwahaha.

    Except the exchange rate! crying.gif

Wasn't CAD higher than USD not long ago?

Bolshoi's Marco Spada will be released on Dec. 1 with pre-order at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Marco-Spada-Bandits-Daughter-Blu-ray/dp/B00NJAOX06/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417241883&sr=8-1&keywords=marco+spada

    I just received Vishneva/Shklyarov's R&J: http://www.amazon.com/Prokofiev-Romeo-Juliet-Blu-Ray-Combo/dp/B00M1562VS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417242210&sr=8-1&keywords=diana+vishneva but importcds.com has a better price: http://www.importcds.com/movies/3958860/romeo-juliet

  6. Box office opened today for subscription for Friends of BAM. You can pick your own seats over the phone but not online. 20% off for 4-6 programs, and 30% off for 7 or more programs. And you can add 2 single tickets for each your subscription program at 15% off. Long wait on the phone but got thru eventually.

  7. Veronika Part in Swan Lake on the 29th the one Swan Lake to be simulcast regionally - too bad it will not reach us statesides

Hoping someone can and will tape and post...

Do you have a link? Which channel? I have a friend there, he's not a ballet fan but I can ask if he can DVR the performance and transfer it to DVD for me. I'd be more than happy to share if he comes thru.

  8. I did not keep any records on the Segerstrom program changes, as I had no plans to attend. For a time, they announced that the Ballet San Jose was going to back them in Carmen and I vaguely remember that the change to drop that came rather late. Had some subscribers and perhaps individual tickets buyers purchased with that in mind? Long before the Carmen announcement, they were going to do an excerpt from La Bayadere, but again, I don't remember if any subscriptions or tickets were on sale at that early juncture. That's a pretty dramatic "program change" in either case, and it's understandable that people were outraged at the final program.

EDIT: Looking back through this thread, I see that Carmen with BSJ was announced on May 5 and cancelled on May 29. It seems likely that tickets were on sale by then.

The first version was le Jeune Homme et la Mort, Gomes world premier, and Kingdom of the Shades. Later the Gomes piece was gone. Then it's totally revised to Carmen with Ballet San Jose and some other pas des deux. Finally, it's Solo for 2. O/V's program changes were chronicled in this thread: http://balletalert.invisionzone.com/index.php?/topic/36955-scfta-dance-season-13-14/

  9. I also saw this on PBS the other night. Pretty good. I enjoyed the dance segments, but not, as Jack Reed has already noted, the voiceovers that often continued all the way through them, so much so that regardless of their value as observations I began to wish I could just hiss “Shut up!”

Sometimes it's not up to the film director and producer to air the footage uninterrupted. When the permission to use the footage is granted, it may attach a condition that the footage be adulterated, i.e. with voice over.
