  1. ABT'S 2015 NEW YORK SUMMER INTENSIVE FINAL PERFORMANCES SCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY, JULY 24, 12 PM AND 2 PM AT FRANK SINATRA SCHOOL OF THE ARTS

    7/9/2015 - Final performances for American Ballet Theatres New York Summer Intensive Program are scheduled for Friday, July 24, 2015 at 12 P.M. and 2 P.M. at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Astoria, New York. The performances mark the conclusion of ABTs 20th annual New York Summer Intensive, a five-week training program for dancers ages 12 to 22.

    Summer Intensive students will perform selections from Coppélia, Gaîté Parisienne, Don Quixote, La Sylphide, Les Sylphides, Swan Lake, The Dream, Theme and Variations and an adaptation of Anton Dolins Variations for Four.

    Participants in American Ballet Theatres Summer Intensives are chosen through a cross-country audition tour sponsored by Freed of London, Ltd, which auditioned more than 4,600 students in 24 cities across the United States. ABTs 2015 Summer Intensives will reach over 1,400 participants in New York City and satellite programs in North Carolina, Alabama, Texas and California.

    The annual Summer Intensive at ABTs New York City studios is a comprehensive course that begins with daily ballet technique class and includes specialized classes in pointe work, partnering, jazz, character dance, modern dance, Pilates and yoga for young dancers. To complement the dancers training, lectures are offered on injury prevention, anatomy, nutrition, music, acting and dance history.

    Under the direction of Melissa Allen Bowman, the 2015 New York Summer Intensive Program incorporates a faculty of ABT alumni, members of ABTs Artistic Staff and renowned teachers, including Kevin McKenzie, Franco De Vita, Raymond Lukens, Kate Lydon, Susan Jaffe, Susan Jones, Clinton Luckett, Nancy Raffa, Keith Roberts, Lupe Serrano, Charles Askegard, Ethan Brown, Gabrielle Brown, Leslie Browne, Harriet Clark, Olga Dvorovenko, Carlos Lopez, Rosanna Seravalli and Cheryl Yeager.

  2. I think Gomes has danced in Russia since then with The Kings, but I'm not positive. I'm pretty sure I haven't seen any other announcements of him performing in Russia, certainly nothing at Mikhailovsky.

  4. Thanks, AlexL and stuben, I'm thrilled ABT will perform at Bard this fall! Natalia, I do hope the Mark Morris is a ballet and not a modern dance piece - I'm good with seeing ABT perform Company B again, but I want to see ballet, too (I need to research The Green Table as I don't know anything about it as yet). I'd like to hear what others think of it here, too.

    The Mark Morris piece is most likely going to be modern. The only classical Morris piece that I know of is Sylvia for SFB. I do hope for a balance diet with classical ballets and tutus. I may skip any all-modern programs. The fall season will be announced this Wed.

  5. Sigh. Although the AP headline states "first black female principal," many reposted versions read "Misty Copeland Becomes First Black Principal Dancer at American Ballet Theater," even though the complete version of the story specifically mentions Desmond Richardson.

    I remember Carlos Acosta joined ABT during early 2000's as a principle, not as a guest. But his tenure lasted only 2 seasons. So she'll be the 3rd black principle at ABT.

  6. I am extremely happy with all the promotions, but disappointed Lane and Baca were left out, hope they'll be promoted next year. The press release didn't mention when the appointment of Kochetkova, Lendorf, and Cirio will be effective, will they dance for the fall and Nutcracker season?

  7. Does RB post castings for the NY portion of the tour on its own website? Or I have to rely on the State Theater website? There could be casting change based on Haglund's Heel 6/21 posting.

  8. I note that it is being reported that the tour is selling poorly and the consensus seems to be that it is repertoire and publicity (or lack thereof) which seems to blame. I don't think I have seen any mention of ticket prices as a possible disincentive. I would be interested to know how expensive the RB tickets are on this tour compared to other companies performing at the same time. Are they more expensive ?

    I'm also curious as to how that compares to what it costs to see them back here in the UK. The top prices here are quite steep (and worse next season) but the price spread is quite wide (even if the cheaper tickets have poor sight lines). Is there the same variety in the venues they have been performing at in the US ?

    Just for the record, when NYCB came to London (quite a few years ago now), I knew many people who were keen to see them but the prices at the time caused a sharp intake of breath. In terms of visiting companies here, the Dutch National Ballet is bringing Wheeldon's Cinderella to the Coliseum next month. Prices for that range from £80 in the stalls to £10 in the balcony - seems to be selling well.

    1st ring: $65, $80, $100, $140

    3nd ring: $45, $65

    4th ring: $25, $35

    4th ring doesn't open if there're still plenty of seats in the lower rings.

    The Met has 4,000 seats, Swan Lake is sold out or close to sell out for many performances. While the State Theater where RB performs has about 2,600 seats. The RB prices are very reasonable and even cheaper than ABT's across the plaza, even cheaper with the aforementioned discounts. So price is not a factor for the poor box office showing. I think the major factors are the reps and the competition from ABT. The Ashton/McMillan mixed bills are selling better than the other mix reps. McGregor & Scarlett are simply not a big draw.

    I'd have bought more RB tickets if ABT is not in residence at the same time or if the programs are more compelling. An all Ashton program is very compelling in my book. RB should have bought more Ashton ballets not already performed by ABT. I bought a ticket to one of the mixed reps on Sunday (when ABT is not performing) just for the divertissement portion of the program.

  9. I wish there were tour funding for ABT to hit the 50 states. Dancers learn to perform by performing. Perhaps all the rep could use more performing. They are performing nowhere after the first week of July, not at all in August... Only two days in September... Only three days in October... Not a day in November...Nothing in December....? (yes, it is too late now, but truly, there dhould have been more on the schedule for this great company.)

    ABT is very tardy in updating its performance schedules. In addition to the fall season from Oct 21 - Nov 1 and the Nutcracker season in December, the tours that I am aware of between now and 9/2016 includes Detroit, DC, Bard College, LA, Istanbul, and Paris.

    I agree that ABT could tour smaller cities with smaller scale works by creating a smaller touring troupe like NYCB Moves, if it doesn't want to dilute its brand by touring the provinces.

    Look like NY is lukewarm to McGregor and Scarlett, plus ABT Swan Lake from across the Plaza doesn't help. I wonder if it's wise to come while ABT is still in season or bringing Don Q would have been doing better at the box office. Several ballet friends of mine are not interested in the McGregor/Scarlett mix reps and would like to go to the Dream mixed bills but it's in conflict with Swan Lake.

    I remember RB sold out at the Met last time they were here in 2004 as part of Lincoln Center Festival, and they were the only ballet game in town.

  11. I can't have enough Ashton, and ABT has a pretty good track record performing them. So I wish the revivals of Awakening PdD, Thaïs PdD, Symphonic Variations, Les Patineurs

    and the acquisitions of Rhapsody, Enigma Variations, and Monotones. And it's never too early to ask for the return of A Month in a Country. Yes to Raymonda, Paquita (or the Grand Pas at the very least). Have anyone seen Ratmansky's Bolero?     The restorations of Act IV of Swan lake. Restaging of Bayadere with the divertissements from the betrothal scene restored and increase the number of shades to 32. A new production of Coppelia a la Bolshoi's.

    I predict the casting of Cassandra Trenary as Aurora in Detroit or DC, if it happens and the out-of-town try out goes well, hope to see her Aurora at the Met.
