  1. Concerto Barocco and Symphony in C....

Hence the great night at NYCB last saturday night (one of the few nights of solid programming IMHO).

While Serenade is a favorite, i think there are some places, when it gets a bit emotional, that make it slightly imperfect. Still, i think those in Chicago have as near to a perfect night at the ballet when NYCB is out there, when they have Serenade, Barocco, Duo Concertant and Symp in C on one program and 4 Ts on other nights.

p.s. did i mention i am walking down the aisle in Sept. to the 2nd mov't of the Bach Double Violin Concerto aka Concerto Barocco?

  2. Congrats to all the dancers! To me, some are surprises, and others are definitely not. It is great to see Fowler's injury did not keep him back for long.

I know we all have our list of dancers who we think should be promoted, but I do think Riggins should not be overlooked, if even for sheer amount of featured dancing she does. Of course, there are other who fall into the category.

  3. Several new names have appeared in the roster at the NYC Ballet website...

Jenelle Manzi, Troy Schumacher, Gretchen Smith, and Giovanni Villalobos.

Thanks, PetipaFan. I'm pretty sure Villalobos and Schumacher actually joined before the Winter Season began, having served as apprentices all last year. Manzi and Smith are part of this year's crop.

  4. Isn't the Octet photo the same one they were using in the posters around Lincoln Center? Or almost exactly the same? I know the posting of photos for us is a courtesy, but it would be nice to have fresh shots!

Mr. Kolnik wasn't as busy last week, just four new ones:

    (Ooooo... two "La's")

    Tala G: Sylve, Kistler, Weese

Friandises: Sloan, Peck, Dronova (a good one of "The Winger")

    BSQ: Sylve, Askegard

Octet: Fairchild, deLuz (especially nice for Megan fans)

  5. I thought Whelan came off looking quite intelligent and poised considering the surprisingly bad interview. I have only watched Rose once or twice before, and so was shocked at how bad he did-- i just *assumed* he'd be good. As justafan said, he answered his own questions, so that Whelan was only left to agree / say yes. He didn't ask many open-ended questions that would leave room for Whelan to give thoughtful responses. When he did, it was quite interesting-- her comments about feeling more free now, and being able indulge herself in the dance, whereas when you're younger it's all about control. In light of that, it makes sense she is more interested in the more romantic Balanchine roles than the leotard ballets. I remember reading in an interview a long time ago that she would love to do La Valse...

  6. I have so strongly come to expect a Bouder fall during debuts that I was relieved when she got it over with during her entrance! In her review yesterday, NY Times's Jennifer Dunning talked about it, and I found it quite amusing to read it. I guess many of us are Bouderites!

"Two of those young stars, Ashley Bouder and Andrew Veyette, were in exciting top form in role debuts in Balanchine's insouciant but challenging "Donizetti Variations" on Saturday afternoon. Bouderites cherish the young ballerina's habit of decisively falling in her first performances of a role, and here she not only fell but slid across the stage on her rump. What followed was just as remarkable: steely all-American technique and daring refined and made even more exciting by a look of almost Gallic ornamentation."

Links to the review are in the Links section and below:

  7. Did anyone see Romeo and Juliet with Zungre? I didn't seem to read any reviews! Was just curious to read about such a debut!

delayed reply... I thought she was lovely. She smiles a lot (not in a grinning way), which I'm not sure i feel fits, but she did have the swooning and emotional build as the music was growing more emotional. She seemed a cross between Ringer and Borree in approach.

  8. A thousand thanks to Megan Fairchild who, with parrtner Joaquin deLuz, rescued the final two thirds of Wednesday evening's program.  :flowers:

I wanted to open the thread and will be back later with more details.

Thanks for starting the thread, carbro. But, what do you mean by "rescued"? Am I correct in taking that to mean that you were not happy with the performances in the latter ballets?

  9. Since I'm still shying away from reviewing much (as a way of just letting myself purely enjoy perfs), this is more of a report than a review. I wanted to post about a crazy two performances.

At Friday night's perf, there were 2 falls and 1 collision in Fearful Symmetries (the final ballet). And, at today's matinee, there were 2 falls in Ballo. And Bouder replaced at the last minute (announcement, not insert). Not sure if it's a slippery stage or exhuberant dancers or both!

Needless today, it took all the great dancing the rest of the time to keep me from being completely on edge!

I'm actually surprised there are not more falls during Fearful, considering how fast and "go for broke" that choreography is. The collison was between Marcovici and Ramasar.

In Ballo, Fairchild made her local "debut" (she performed the piece at SAB) and faced a conductor who seemed even faster than Quinn. Ballo is normally a fast piece, but this seemed even more so. The conductor was one of the guest conductors (I misplaced my program). She fell (or just stumbled?) in one spot and had much trouble in another spot, and I think the tempo was more to blame than lack of rehearsal or last minute notice. She was the true MVP of today's perf, as she only has one ballet to recovery before she had to then perform in Fearful.

I hope the bruised dancers are ok,... and I pray that Bouder's absence was not indicative of anything more than a temporary injury or illness. My sister thought I looked i was going to cry when the announcement was made (I didn't; i was more worried!)!

My one "review" is that I thought Pazcoguin fabulous in Opus Jazz. I had previously seen the solo parts done by Krohn. Pazcoguin really seemed to get the kind of energy and tension needed for this type of Robbins piece, and it was truly appreciated. I think some of the dancers are still too reserved in their moves-- afterall they are ballet bancers. But, some, like Pazcoguin took the steps the extra mile. Hendrickson, Carmena, and Suozzi were other standouts for their immersion into the Robbins world.

  10. I didn't participate in the discussion, but from reading it, I got the sense the debate wasn't about whether Mearns COULD do it, but whether she SHOULD be doing it.

    -amanda

    Well, this is fun.

After the blood, sweat & tears, to-the-mat discussion about Mlle. Mearns, and should he have or shouldn't he have, it sounds like it turned out fine.

Just goes to show that we can have passion and bloviate and sometimes we are wrong...(then again, we can have passion and bloviate and sometimes we are right...and sometimes we just have passion...and sometimes we just bloviate...and mostly we have passion and fun)

  11. Mehopes she justs survives it, happily.  So we can see what new story she'll tell on Sunday.  Does anyone else grow a role as rapidly as Ashley Bouder?

I'm with you. I am there tonight and i then bought a ticket for sunday. I was there for her two Sleeping Beauty perfs, and the 2nd was better (at least for the reason that she didn't fall out of the final rose adagio pose). I'm just gonna be too nervous tonight! I think I'll just enjoy myself more on Sunday!

  12. Front Row Center is back.

There are a lot more photos than usual!

I think the photo of the end of Fearful Symmetries perfectly illustrates why I love Somogyi and why I have reservations about A. Stafford. There's nothing "wrong" with her pose. But, Somogyi expresses such passion even in a still photo, while A. Stafford still seems too academic for my tastes. A. Stafford seems much happier on the stage since her full return, so I'm hoping she'll learn to "open up" more and more now.

  14. Are you certain about the razing of the building? It was my understanding a couple of weeks ago, from one of the long-time tenants, that the interior will be totally renovated & individual units sold as coops or condos.

The article i read made it sound like they're razing it. BUt, maybe it's just an extensive renovation that takes over those spaces? I thought it strange since PJ Clarke's had a sign there...

  15. Not directly ballet, but of interest to those who frequent NYCB and ABT at Lincoln Center. Not only did the Empire Hotel close awhile ago, but now it is being torn down. At first, it seemed they might just be converting it, and there was a sign for PJ Clarke's coming soon.

But, NYCB's Kristin Sloan posted in her blog about the Empire Deli closing. And, i just read today that Lincoln Stationers is closing after 30 years b/c the building is being torn down. I guess they plan to build a taller apt. builting.

For discount hounds, Lincoln Stationers' stuff is supposedly 50% off right now. They close Jan. 11. Silver lining?
