His leaving NYCB/SAB as staff a few years ago was related to other matters, come more publicly to light since all the Peter Martins allegations.

I don't think someone mentioned this already-- but Darci Kistler was the primary person to do the female role for many years and did so beautifully, and she was a taller dancer.

I like Ash, though I think it's a dancer killer.

I meant throughout that entire spring season, which was a wonderful crash course in Balanchine. The telecast was the final performance.

I think they did T&V on its own during the Balanchine Celebration in '93. There were many things brought back for just that season I wouldn't mind seeing again, not that I recall any ballet names.

I actually love this production of SB for that very reason. I'm of a Balanchine pace, and so typically full-lengths are just not my cup-of-tea. I realize it may seem like reading the cliff notes than reading a book to some, but you still get Petipa's (and Balanchine's choreography) and numerous moments for corps in soloist roles to shine. I think, perhaps, this production of SB is so much better than Martins' other productions because... he interjected less of himself and his tastes in it!

I have appreciated both men in the past, but they really were superb in Divertimento -- graceful, with ease, and engaged-- and quite a contrast to Veyette. I have been a fan of Veyette's generally-- but this performance, like others said, was so very labored. It marred an otherwise splendid performance of the ballet.

To those who asked about the Janice Levin dancer -- The person is honored at the annual Guild luncheon usually held around Valentine's Day, and then that's when the name usually goes in the program. Always a corps member, as it's meant for an up-and-coming dancer. Sometimes dancers are so up-and-coming, they skip right over that award or get promoted within the year.

Should be. They usually do list the women in order of variation, and the first man is the lead.

The docu was previewed at the Guild luncheon in early February. Parker spoke very passionately about it.

They traditionally send the tickets only a few weeks before the season begins, regardless of when you order. -amanda

She is still working on recovering from her injury, she told me. So that's why she's just attempting one ballet beyond the Lee ballet before season's end. -amanda

Has anyone seen the new DC production that's headed for B'way? There are major changes, and from what I have read elsewhere, the changes are getting mixed reviews. The choreography, of course, seems to be universally praised... -amanda

At a recent NYCB seminar, Jonathan Stafford said he would be out this season, as he was having an operation (don't recall on what part of the body, but the seminar is available in 3 parts on the NYCB website). -amanda

Shocking! This is the first time in awhile, I believe, that we have had a single promotion. I was expecting this one, so also expected a few others (even if they company is a bit top heavy right now). -amanda

At least the last few held after I started attending NYCB perfs were on Sunday nights, in place of the 7pm perf (back when there was a 1pm and 7pm perf on Sundays). I'd say that would be the worst time for a dance event, and the timing was probably one of the reasons they didn't fill the theaters then (at least they weren't full when I went). It's one thing to have the Balanchine Celebration final event last hours upon hours into a Sunday night; it's another to have a random grouping of excerpts-- without the sexiness of 'dancer's choice' at that time. As for the Froman photos-- I haven't 'thought' much about them until now, and had simply gone with my gut reaction, which was that they were really cool. I believe I read somewhere that the girls in the orchestra were supposed to have the effect like they were rippling down the seats. Can't say I perceived it that way, but I just thought all of the photos were fun-- a different way of seeing the dancers. While some may perceive the girls/orchestra photo and quote as against each other, some could also say it was ironic. Froman commented how he wanted to show how the dancers are inseparable from the theater, they are a foundation and part of it. I went with that in looking at all the photos. -amanda
