Reviews of the Australian Ballet in "Harlequinade."

The Age

Quote

Anyone who fears the earthy ribaldry of the commedia – where Harlequin’s stick is traditionally both weapon and phallus – can rest assured. There is nothing here that could offend the fastidious tastes of a tsar or tsarina. This is the most modest fairy tale.

Limelight

Brett Chynoweth’s performance as the protagonist on opening night was impressively energetic, deftly navigating the many bursts of petit and grand allegro littered throughout. It’s a role well suited to the artist’s athleticism but a more indulgent exploration of his character felt warranted. The harlequin’s choreographic motifs – be it one leg tucked high with hands tossed carelessly upwards or a brisk jaunty shuffle with swaying hips – begged for a zanier, almost cartoonish, rendering to really anchor the show’s absurdity.

The Australian

Circumstance – the pandemic – is why Harlequinade follows Kunstkamer in The Australian Ballet’s winter season in Melbourne. The feather-light Petipa ballet from 1900 was to have premiered in former artistic director David McAllister’s 2020 final season. It didn’t get up last year either. Same reason.

It is worth mentioing that Cairo Opera Ballet was founded in 1966 and was affiliated with the Higher Institute of Ballet, and presented its first performances in the same year.

The company performed a full range of ballets from the classical ballet repertoire including Don Quixote, Paquita, Giselle, Swan Lake, Le Corsaire and Scheherazade. In 1969 the Company hosted the Royal Ballet for a performance of Swan Lake at pyramids in Giza.

This commemorative program advocated by NBC head Feng Ying has seen a number of previous lead NBC dancers such as Zhu Yan, Zhang Jian, and Wang Qimin return to the stage.
