dirac
Helgi Tomasson is honored in San Francisco. Quote He didn’t need to talk. “Helgi Tomasson: A Celebration” featured video tributes from the likes of choreographers Mark Morris and Christopher Wheeldon, American Ballet Theatre artistic director Kevin McKenzie, and past company members Elizabeth Loscavio, Anthony Randazzo and Mikko Nissinen, now the artistic director of Boston Ballet. Another company member turned director, Joffrey Ballet leader Ashley Wheater, spoke from the stage, as did Hamburg Ballet director John Neumeier, who recounted making one of his earliest works, “Stages,” for Tomasson at the intrepid Harkness Ballet in 1968. dirac
A feature on Ballet Black by Precious Adesina in The New York Times. Quote Pancho knows such challenges for British dancers all too well. She started Ballet Black — which recently turned 20 — after attending the Royal Academy of Dance in London. Pancho, who has a white mother and a Trinidadian father, said she hadn’t given her race much thought before attending the school. Once there, Pancho was “shocked at the lack of people of color around me, and that in the eyes of this school, I was considered to be a person of color,” she said. Link to comment
