An article on the ballet scene in postwar Malta.

Quote

As explained in the chapter ‘The Ballet Boom of the Fifties’ in the recently-published book Princess Poutiatine and the Art of Ballet in Malta, ballet in Malta appealed to the post-war, aspirational middle classes of Malta. Boston Ballet's Viktorina Kapitonova talks about presenting virtual performances.

Quote

“Now we have time to revisit or do something again, which is a fantastic opportunity that you never get on stage,” she said with a laugh. “When you dance in the moment, you feel it and you enjoy it. But digitally, if something doesn’t work you can stop, you can repeat again. But it can actually be harder to get that energy.”

Kevin O'Hare writes about working during the pandemic in The Evening Standard.

Quote

The fortunate thing about this second lockdown for the Royal Ballet is that we have been able to carry on in some ways. It is essential work for dancers to keep rehearsing and keep in shape. On Monday morning I have a meeting with the CEO of the Royal Opera House — the main aim of all these conversations is to get ourselves and our audience into the building, which involves things we never had to think of before, such as the airflow in the studios. The dancers all wear masks in rehearsals and we test twice a week.
