The Royal Opera House will stream "The Metamorphosis" tonight.

Quote

It’s a production that was first staged at the cosier Linbury, before moving to the main Royal Opera House stage to open the 2011-12 dance season – to rousing critical acclaim. It was then broadcast on Sky Arts and showered with prizes, the South Bank Sky Arts Award and the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance for Edward Watson. Any why is it relevant now? In the midst of the pandemic, it is one of a handful of the finest Royal Opera House productions, part of their ‘greatest hits archive’, that they are premiering via their YouTube channel, to the public locked up at home, bringing culture to your very doormat.

“We just don’t see how it’s safe to bring our audiences or our orchestra or our dancers together into that enclosed space like the Peristyle before the end of May or early June," Vassar said. "So, it’s an abundance of caution and we hope that we see the economy open up some more and that some of those restrictions with careful consultation with public health officials, of course, would allow us to do performances maybe even in the late summer.”

An appreciation of "The Red Shoes" by Lucy Kent for "So the Theory Goes."

Quote

The Red Shoes follows a dance company preparing to perform and tour with the ballet: but love, art, life, and death are all swept up in the dance. In casting, Powell and Pressburger found dancers who act, rather than actors who dance, resulting in a cinematic experience that is rooted in balletic expression and multi-layered performance. It is a film about loving and needing art. In its central characters – composers, dancers, choreographers and even ballet audiences – there is a human yearning for artistic expression.

After a three-week break that had been planned long before virus concerns shuttered performance venues, the Ballet's company dancers “returned” on Tuesday for a meeting via the video chat service Zoom to learn more about how things were going to work for the remainder of their contracts, which end May 24 after 31 working weeks.
