dirac
Annabelle Lopez Ochoa makes a new work for Dutch National Ballet based on the life of Frida Kahlo. Quote Ms. Lopez Ochoa presents Kahlo in 16 incarnations, each played by a different dancer. There is a Frida wearing a white corset, as depicted in her famous 1944 painting “The Broken Column,” and one as Kahlo envisioned herself in Victorian dress as part of the 1939 work “The Two Fridas.” Frida also appears in the ballet as a male dancer, a deer, and a tiny skeleton, performed by a child. The bill of 12 works included two world premieres (a planned third was replaced by Danielle Rowe’s intimate and captivating “For Pixie”), the San Francisco premiere of a David Dawson-choreographed “Swan Lake” pas de deux and assorted other classic and contemporary pieces.
