A preview of San Francisco Ballet's new season.

Program Three: Dance Innovations

This is the wildest emotional and stylistic range of the season’s mixed bills, and the one most likely to provoke thought while satisfying all tastes. Trey McIntyre takes on Prokofiev’s colossal and famously difficult second piano concerto in his world premiere, “The Big Hunger,” which explores existential angst with Sartrean intensity. Edwaard Liang’s “The Infinite Ocean” is a different experience altogether, soothingly pretty and romantic. Harald Lander’s “Etudes” closes this program with a madcap ride from ballet barre to tutu battalion.

Northern Ballet celebrates its fiftieth anniversary.

The gala was hosted by David Nixon, Northern Ballet’s artistic director of the past two decades, who grasped the opportunity with theatrical panache, interlaced with snippets of film to represent the tenures of his four predecessors: the founding director, another Canadian, Laverne Meyer; Robert de Warren; the late Christopher Gable (represented in a charming filmed segment by his widow, Carole); and the brief term of Stefano Giannetti.
