Glenn Branca has died at age 69.

Mr. Branca, who died this week at 69, helped shape that musical world for decades. Several worlds, in fact: Informed by conceptual art as well as rock, his band Theoretical Girls was central to the No Wave scene of the late 1970s. In the ’80s, his approach to guitar tunings and his expansion into longer forms influenced groups like Sonic Youth, whose members played in Mr. Branca’s early guitar orchestras.

He and his colleagues were a part of the downtown dance scene in the 1980s -- it's when I first started carrying earplugs to dance shows.  I loved the visceral nature of the work, but it was very loud.
