Perhaps speeding it up might help a little. The lugubrious tempo is also what makes the Clemence variation in Raymonda so dull, but I have a feeling modern tempi are partly to blame. Puss in Boots was mentioned earlier, and I don't care for the duet either. But I have to admit that in the Nureyev production it goes over like gangbusters, especially among children. That's important, because Sleeping Beauty is a very long ballet, and by that point kids have usually lost interest. But Nureyev's cats put them right back into the game, which is reason enough to keep them. Link to comment
