Least Favorite Variation

I also have no use for Odile's variation, either the choreography or the music, which is dull in the extreme. Perhaps speeding it up might help a little. The lugubrious tempo is also what makes the Clemence variation in Raymonda so dull, but I have a feeling modern tempi are partly to blame.

Puss in Boots was mentioned earlier, and I don't care for the duet either. But I have to admit that in the Nureyev production it goes over like gangbusters, especially among children. That's important, because Sleeping Beauty is a very long ballet, and by that point kids have usually lost interest. But Nureyev's cats put them right back into the game, which is reason enough to keep them.
