Majinsky Posted June 20, 2005 Posted June 20, 2005 I just performed in Balanchine's Western Symphony and I totally fell in love with the music. I know what old folk songs the music is made of, but does anybody know where I can get a copy of Western's composition. Much help is needed!
Mel Johnson Posted June 20, 2005 Posted June 20, 2005 Hershy Kay's score for this work is a pastiche of "Western" songs like "Oh, Susanna", "Git Along Little Dogies", and "As I Walked out on the Streets of Laredo". To my knowledge it's never been recorded and released for a general listening audience.
Anthony_NYC Posted June 20, 2005 Posted June 20, 2005 Actually, it was recorded twice by the NYCB Orchestra back in the LP era, under Robert Irving (together with Stars & Stripes) and Leon Barzin (with Virgil Thomson's The Filling Station). You might call around to some stores that specialize in LPs; if you don't have a turntable, there are people you can pay to transfer to CD. Princeton Record Exchange Record Finder Westsider Records Academy Records Surprising that Arthur Fiedler never got around to this one.
Majinsky Posted June 20, 2005 Author Posted June 20, 2005 Thanks Ant. though I have to say I really wish I could just find a cd version and unfortunately I don't have a hifi so I have to keep looking.
