I am wondering if anything has ever been written about the biblical allusions in the title and in the choice of the heroine's name. It's not clear to me if there is any relationship to the action of the ballet.

I believe that the effective passage you mean is the description of Moses and the Israelites being led out of slavery by God "as a column of smoke in the day, and a pillar of fire in the night."

"Hagar" can translate either as "stranger" or "one who fears".

Never saw much discussion of it by anybody else, but those are the references.
