  1. I also love this photo of Tanaquil LeClercq because it's so different from the usual ballet poses. I don't know which role she's dancing, but she looks so gorgeous, yet quirky. It's enchanting.

Looks as if she was clowning during the photo shoot..the costume is Bouree Fantasque and the shoot was with Jerome Robbins..there are others online as well as in books.....

  2. I attended a RNO concert in NY earlier this month.....the program was Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky. Stravinsky's arrangement of selections from Sleeping Beauty, Baiser de la Fee, and Suite # 3. The encores were Garland Waltz and Rose Adagio.

It was an absolutely splendid concert. The orchestra has a recording of Suite #3 which is not quite as invigorating as a live performance, but pretty close!

  3. Tzigane was done with a slightly smaller cast, (two side couples) on Milennium stage last fall at KenCen. It was superb---Magnicaballi was the best I have ever seen her and the levels of dancing and energy were 150% of what I expected. Farrell knows how to coach, no doubt about it.....a superb performance.

Berkshires mugginess is not on a par with the Washington summer, as Jacob's Pillow is not situated in a swamp like Washington. Sounds like a great getaway to me.....interesting dance offerings! AND---not too far from Saratoga, so a trip to SPAC to see NYCB is a definite possiblity for a great dance-oriented vacation!!!!!

  4. I agree, and it is the obvious solution. No critic is going to suggest this, in print at least, however. They'd never get another callback from the press office, let alone tickets....this critic went as far to suggest casting changes as possible, but it will never happen, despite this gentle hint.

  5. The dancers are evidently without unemployment benefits, too.

Wonder if Palmquist would have been so quick to reject Michael Kaiser's offer to help ("it's too soon to mediate") if he had been denied benefits. I wonder just what he deems sufficient time. This gets worse and worse......

  6. "As for her segment, when Caroline Kennedy introduce her dancers to perform Divertimento No. 15, the camera gave us a side shot of Farrell with her hands to her mouth. Clearly she was surprise her dancers was going to perform in her honor."

What I said was in reference to the above statement, Jack. Didn't make myself clear--sorry!

Sometimes they do rebroadcast the Honors programs, so we might be lucky--

  7. Well, it certainly zipped along at a good clip---quite speedy, but wasn't the dancing good? What we could see of it! Too far away, for the most part, but the costumes looked nice in the long shots.....colours and patterns read quite well on television.

Dancing was quick, clean ... corps was beautifully articulated ....Ansanelli looked wonderful and I shall miss her greatly.....

"So I'm a little confused. Is her company made up of students, or is it professional?"

Ian, they are professionals. Many of them dance with other companies, others schedule their engagements around SFB, others dance with Farrell and have been with her for a while. She has definite things which she wants to see in her dancers and which she requires from them--watching the performance tonight, it is evident that they give her 150% effort and commitment.

  8. It left me more than misty-eyed....I cried through a good bit of it...the bodies change, the spark remains.....

I plan to see it again and buy the DVD. All praise to the filmmakers for preserving the memories. I was too young to have seen these performances but recall thinking as I pored over old programs and souvenir books how very tough this life must have been and how dedicated to the art the dancers were. Even today touring is so hard, the life so unsettled....it was an inspiring film for me.

Really, I cannot recommend it too highly.

  9. Something pretty and festive--a dressy suit with a sparkly pin, or long pants with a dressy fancy top, or frankly, whatever she wants and feels nice in. No jeans. Holidays are a good chance to dress up!

There will be lots of children in party clothes. If she parks under Kennedy Center, she won't have to be outside, so no worry about ruining fancy shoes. (Be advised, though, that parking is $15 :thanks: )

There is a shuttle bus that runs to the Metro Station at Foggy Bottom, if she takes Metro and doesn't want to walk in bad weather. The Metro stop is quite close, however.
