  1. This is her last season at ABT, so unfortunately, we have to get used to many years without VP Swan Lakes

According to K. Ryan, the PR person for ABT, today: Ms. Part is returning to ABT. I can only suppose that in between the interview when she stated that she was leaving, and now, there has been a shift. I have seen nothing in print, but this is from today's intermission press room conversation......and Swan Lake's Queen is exquisite today.

  2. And kudos to Ms. Messmer! She did a beautiful job in the pd3 with Saveliev and Melissa Thomas, and really came out flying as a replacement for Part! I saw her jump and immediately pulled out my binoculars--

The entire performance was so rewarding ... I discount fouettes and the botched lift at end of Black Swan pdd, as those were just minor aspects of a really stellar performance by Ananiashvili and Gomez.

  3. On Gillian last night, the blue was beautiful with her hair and skin.....and then Carreno walked over in the pants.....The pants match the scenery perfectly, but the bright blue of that tutu.....eeeeuw. The tutu ornamentation is lovely (silver peacock feather patterns) but it's made from lycra/milliskin or some matte stretchy stuff that is firmly tacked to the tutu all the way around the outer edge, heightening the circus pinwheel aspect. Nasty.

I loved the steel grey/oyster/abalone look of the previous tutu....they could have even gone with a more traditional lilac/lavender version. This blue was just wrong.

    Oh, the dancing was splendid!

  4. Don't think it's a Karinska, because of bodice construction and fit......but I especially enjoy her 'take no prisoners' expression. I can just imagine her in this pdd; she probably wielded that fan like an uzi.....

  5. "any BAISER fan hasn't ever read THE ICE MAIDEN tale i recommend it highly. it's beautifully told, even in the english translation of the danish that "

I heartily second rg........ this is now readily available, thanks to the wonders of digitization of many library books......I read it many years ago (in my previous career as a children's librarian) and thank him for prodding my memory!

(Do a Google search of Ice Maiden Andersen and there are quite a few hits.)

    Back to topic....

  6. Frequently, the search needs to be as simple as possible, in this case, "Talich Tchaikovsky"........

Mozartiana is here indexed as Mozartia. I bought the symphony/suite collection with Tilson Thomas as mine went missing after being lent out....

Librarians and professional researchers will always advise: simplify searches and assume that no one can spell.....I was happy that I didn't have to wade through all the possible transliterations of Tchaikovsky, frankly.

Let me know if you are still unsuccessful and I'll send you the link via PM.

  7. Yes, thank you, Nanarina for your comments. I agree with sz that the Karinska tutus for Symphony in C provide a much more sprightly, youthful form and are quite lovely. You may be interested in the extensive discussions on tutus which are on Ballet Talk for Dancers, in the Pro Shop forum. Many of our contributors there are professional costumers, and some are very experienced in building tutus. You are correct in that there are many different shapes and methods of construction; quite often professional costumers can tell the costume shop 'signatures' just by looking at the slope of a skirt, ornamentation, etc.

Please visit the Pro Shop--I'm sure you'll find it interesting and we would welcome your contributions!!

  8. I ws so excited when my Kirov 1977 La Baydere arrived on Thursday. How wonderful it is to finally have this on DVD. Komleva's wonderful Nikiya, Terekhova's brilliant Gamzatti, the exquisite corps work, especially in The Kingdom of The Shades. :)

Has anyone else received their Bayadere?

I'm still in the dark ages with my videocassette of this.....gradually I will upgrade, I imagine! It is a wonderful, wonderful performance...
