  1. There is also a second book like this, with some other ballets in it. I have it at home (which is not where I am now), I can look up the title if you wish. It is from the 80's, don't know the exact year.

I came upon this thread again by accident, but as I'm home and have the book here right now, I might as well reply.

The book is called "The Bolshoi Theatre" (subtitle: History - Opera - Ballet) and was published in 1987 (Planeta Publishers - they also brought out the previous book in two parts). It contains beautiful photos from opera and ballet productions of that time.

  2. The fact that she decided not to take any important documents with her does seem to say she's aware of these kind of things happening - whether it's a habit from home in Moscow or because she thinks NY is dangerous..

  3. I've been lucky enough to be taken to the ballet as a child. I don't remember my first Giselle, just the general scenery and that she wore a yellow dress in act I! I don't remember anything from act II, might have fallen asleep.

  4. In Grigorovich's Spartacus the male lead lifts Phrygia only once or twice in the first act. When I saw it two years ago, some makeup from his face (I think), accidentally found its way to her tights during this lift. The spot bothered me during the whole ballet..

That's the downside of sitting near the stage, I suppose, It's hard to miss the imperfections. :)

  5. This article was posted in yesterday's links.

This is in fact the very first I hear about something being broadcasted in 3D, and I understand it will even be live!

I saw some of the recent 3D movies, and after wearing the glasses for about half an hour they started really irritating me (they were quite heavy!). Plus I didn't really care about the 3D-ness.

I can imagine it makes a movie more spectacular, but for a broadcast of dancing on a stage I don't really see how this would make things better.

What do you think about this? Will it make the experience of watching ballet on a screen better?

I can even really enjoy a very grainy image, if the dancing is excellent :off topic:

  6. I just came across this on Youtube, you can find the rest of the performance on the user's channel:

The channel is dedicated to Yuliana Malkhasyants (a character dancer of the Bolshoi ballet), and it has a special performance of many different character dances. And I see now, some ice skating as well.

I don't know much about character dance, I just know I enjoy the Russians most in it, and I certainly enjoyed watching these videos.

  7. I don't think there are any specific rules about the people they put on stamps here. There are a number "limited edition" series of stamps every year to celebrate certain events, .. So I'd think this would be an example of that.

But I would like to note I know next to nothing about stamps, so I'm absolutely not sure.

  8. I am confused though...is that Mikhail Lobukhin from the Mariinsky dancing with Maria Alexsandrova?? There is no Lobukhin on the Bolshoi website that I can see or have really heard of before (that I can remember). What is going on here?!

Mikhail Lobukhin is listed on the Bolshoi's website now as a principal. He hasn't disappeared (yet) from the Mariinsky's site though.

  9. I came across this by accident today, on russianballetvideos.com, at the bottom of the page:

This video, "Classical Ballet Gala" is of the new company called "The Saint-Petersburg Classic Ballet Theatre of Marina Medvetskaya". It is an Award Winning company from Saint-Petersburg, Russia and features ballet artists trained at the Vaganova Ballet Academy. Among these artists is featured Natalia Romanova, one of the last trained pupils of Natalia Dudinskaya.
