Thanks for posting about this. The book looks interesting - I have been to this shop when I was 16, and was in awe of everything. I bought my first "Bayadere" cd there as at the time it was rare to find a recording of it.

I can't wait to get this! After reading Krasovskya's, "Vaganova: A Dance Journey from Leningrad to Petersburg" I was hoping to have a more recent book with emphasis on the actual schooling and thoughts from others. This is exciting indeed!

For those of you in NY, just letting you know that we will be having a second encore presentation of the Bolshoi Ballet's "Coppelia" this Thursday, August 25th at 7PM at BAM. Tickets are $24, $22 for BAM Cinema Members. It really is a nice production, with some very nice behind the scenes footage, including sneek peeks at the renovation process for the opening of the actual Bolshoi Theatre in November! (Which we will be screening live, aside a performance of Sleeping Beauty, more on that later!)

Joseph, can movie theaters request to become a site that shows these movies? I noticed that we can request from Emerging Pictures and the more that request then something will be done, but can it be done the other way around also? Can we ask our local movie theater to contact Emerging Pictures and start showing them?

Yes, absolutely. In fact I recommend you do BOTH. Contact your theater and then contact us with that same theater - so then when we contact them, it is like "Oh, what a coincidence..." Yes, you can certainly contact your local theater and ask them to contact us - that would be great!

I checked Children of Paradise and found only a few theaters committed, none of them in my state. However, it seems you can request a theater in your area. If there are enough requests for that theater, I guess they may add a show.

One of the difficulties with ballet "movies" in spread-out areas, or outside the usual ballet centers, is getting the word out to the audience. Ballet In Cinema have what seems to be a clever way to develop a mailing list of supporters -- "Super Fans" -- who will actually participate in getting the word out in their area. All you do is give your email and zip code.

Yes this is the correct website. Getting the word out is one of, if not the toughest challange for Emerging Pictures. I would like to secure more venues as well, but it really comes from the audience to contact their theatres and demand that it be brought to them. If the theatre knows their local public has interest, they will most likely try to get our services.

The movie theater selects which offerings they would like to show. While we can suggest or recommend some over others, ultimately it is up to the theater to decide which ballets and / or how many ballets they will show in a season. Of course, say if you want to have "Children of Paradise" or for example "Swan Lake" it is always a good thing to let your theatre know that specifically and you can also let us know as well for future purposes. If the theatre sees enough potential interest in one ballet, they will most likely screen it at some point. And we can also do a lot of convincing on our end as well

Just to remind everyone - TODAY, JULY 9, there will be a live broadcast of Jose Martinez's "Children of Paradise," a ballet based on the film of the same name. It is being broadcast LIVE from the Paris Opera Ballet. For NY audiences it is being shown at the BIG Cinemas Manhattan, at 239 E 59th street, between 2nd and 3rd avenue at 1:30 PM.

There will also be an encore screening on Sunday, June 17 as some theaters do not have the proper equipment to handle LIVE broadcasts. Usually, depending on the cinemas, these screenings are slightly cheaper. But, it is always exciting to see it live!

A film version of Angelin Preljocaj's "Snow White" played tonight at the Vancouver International Film Festival. It isn't even a question of whether or not this a ballet: the majority of it isn't dance. It is more a work of theater, and while its high points were gestural and movement-based, its low points were his attempts at dance. The score is a pastiche of Mahler symphony excerpts.

Any word as to whether or not this will be released commercially?

Anyone know if POB Nutcracker is released yet on DVD or how to get it? Saw some clips on YouTube, dancers look great!

I like this notion - I had no idea that happened in the original!

Why did Petipa use the same variation for both ballets? Or perhaps it was not Petipa, but does anyone know? I know there are slight changes in the arms, etc. but a colleague of mine and I got into a discussion about it to no avail...

Surely someone here knows as usual...

John Neuemier's version "Illusions Like Swan Lake" uses I believe pretty much all of that music in the ballet. Not sure about Dance Russe though, actually perhaps not. But interesting how he uses the Drigo orchestrations normally in Act IV in Act I for variations.

Anyone know? It is a DVD out.
