ABT performed Baryshnikov's Nutcracker at the Met in May 1977, but that was an extraordinary situation. It had debuted at the Kennedy Center in December 1976 and New Yorkers were anxious to see it. I somehow doubt it would make sense to do Ratmansky's Nutcracker now in June.

I had forgotten about this, but Gelsey made her debut in this Nutcracker in September 1977, again at the Met. And, again, an extraordinary situation, welcoming Gelsey back after a year away due to illness.

Thank you, California! I did not know that. Makes me more grateful for Gelsey's Clara being recorded.

He was the only Ivan I ever saw who made it seem absolutely right that he ends up with the Princess rather than the Firebird, even though the latter has the best steps and a snazzy costume.

Glad to know I wasn't the only one who felt Ivan should have ended up with the Firebird!

Do you mean WILL be turnover?

We’ll have to wait and see what she does, but new leadership usually involves changes so I’m hoping she will make some in favor of promoting some corps dancers (if McKenzie doesn’t do it himself before he leaves).

Yes, that was what I meant! 😊

I thought the company as a whole looked fantastic, especially the corps which is chocked full of talent. So many women and men corps dancers are able to do so much more as we've seen the past two weeks alone. Yet, the problem is where do they go with a soloist rank that is full with dancers (except one, maybe two) who have been at that level for years and do not have what it takes to move up thus making room for others. Coker needs to be made a soloist already and there are several men who could easily take on that title as well. It's a great thing for the company to have so much corps talent but it's a problem when there isn't room for them to move up to the level they deserve.

Am I correct in assuming there won't be turnover in the company once Susan Jaffe takes over which could potentially make room for promotions?

The black swans are the subject of endless fascination. According to NYCB: https://www.nycballet.com/discover/ballet-repertory/swan-lake-balanchine/

In 1986 the production was redesigned once more by Alain Vaes who created an icy landscape instead of the traditional Gothic lakeside, and dressed the corps of swans in black, which Balanchine may have been planning in 1981 when he mysteriously ordered 400 yards of black tarlatan. When asked to justify this odd request, Balanchine merely said, “There are black swans as well.”

I've never seen any other explanation of Balanchine's thinking.

Thank you for the information, California!

  6. I tip my hat again to PA Ballet for their Resilience digital program! "And So It Is" wasn't my cup of tea, but it was nice to see Jermel Johnson. So Jung Shin stole the spotlight in "Polyphonia." "Raymonda Suite" looked beautiful -- set, costumes, lighting. I found Dayesi Torriente mesmerizing in the clapping variation (my least favorite of Raymonda's solos).  "Allegro Brillante" was the best of the mixed bill. The dynamic between Mayara Piniero (vibrant) and Zecheng Liang (cool) made for a fantastic partnership.

    BRAVO!!!

Balanchine's one-act Swan Lake, performed by Ballet Chicago:

Thank you, nanushka! Had not seen Balanchine's ballet before. His version seemed more atmospheric than dramatic: no mention/chance of Odette's spell being broken; Siegfried left alone in despair at dawn. The groupings and patterns of the swan maidens were quite lovely.

    SEPTEMBER 29 - ALL BALANCHINE

Program to include Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux, “The Unanswered Question” from Ivesiana, and excerpts from Symphony in C, Liebeslieder Walzer, Episodes, and Stravinsky Violin Concerto.

The All Balanchine program knocked it out of the park IMO!! I had a smile on my face almost from start to finish. Episodes and Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux were my favorite performances. 🥰
