    There may be women walking around topless in Times Square, but they chose to be topless in public.

    She did not consent to be seen topless by the people who saw her photo.

    I've been skeptical of this take Drew is referring to (not "knowing" it is considered racist) throughout this thread.

    In part because I follow football (soccer) and there have been many controversies regarding Russia/anti-black racism/blackface in the recent past.

    Clearly Russians know it offends a great many people, they just don't particularly care or care to live according to other people's values.

     

    Note there have been a lot of really disgusting racist incidents in sport in Italy, England, etc.

    I'm not saying it is worse in Russia (though it may be), but the "we aren't racist, we don't have your/US history" and especially "we didn't know it was racist and because we don't have your history it isn't" arguments really don't hold water.

    I think it is very unjustified to call sharing videos of her dancing as "tooting their own horn constantly."

    She is a dancer. She posts videos of her dancing. She isn't advertising other things--she's showing a rare glimpse of her process and progress.

    She's also a very good dancer, who I think richly deserves a promotion for her dancing...which is precisely what she's showing on social media. Her dancing.

    I really don't understand the indignation about it on here. If one is a fan of dance (which I assume we all are) why the intense criticizing of a dancer for providing increased access to just that.

    we also have no idea whose choice it is not to dance with whom. It could be Cornejo who isn't comfortable dancing with her for personal reasons.

     

    Let's keep in mind we have no idea if one of them treated the other badly or if this was a mutual decision.

    Nope because she wasn't in Apollo to open the afternoon. She was in one of the 2 middle pieces (the Tippet) but I think that was it. Still a very full day!

    I think Hammoudi and Gorak were promoted with the thought they did have principal potential, but they haven't shown themselves up to it.

    I feel Scott was promoted as more of a demi-character dancer like Salstein and never intended for principal.

    Zhurbin does so many of the important character roles, I think he earned his promotion in recognition of that fact.

     

    I also thought Hammoudi injured himself. He was at Saturday's matinee performance in the audience.

I recently sent the Performing Arts Library a donation, which probably is why I got a flyer with early notice of the presentations, however, you can easily find them online.

    I kind of like the pleated dresses. There was a fascinating presentation at the Performing Arts Library last night, on the history of Apollo including various productions and costumes. These dresses are very sedate compared to some of the old productions. Last night's presentation got me interested to see the ABT production (which otherwise I hadn't been planning to see), in order to see the prologue and apotheosis. Off topic from ABT, but at last night's presentation I was most impressed with the old footage of Ib Andersen's Apollo. So intensely human and musical. Really compelling. 

    Oh that sounds like a really interesting presentation! Do they have a mailing list or something? How does one find out about such things?

     

    Regarding the dresses, I like them much more than NYCB's which appear to be plain white leotards with simple dance skirts. Nothing Greek about them at all.

     

    That said neither look is offensive and I care much more about the dancing.

    ABT actually has more Asian dancers and could cast Stella Abrera and Hee Seo in "Bugaku" (Hee is not ideal but she is Asian) and Joo Won Ahn as the partner - maybe Kimin Kim could guest.  Plus there are two other Asian men and two girls in the corps de ballet and Zhong Jing Fang, a soloist.  The piece requires a soloist couple and four corps couples - so five women and five men.  Allegra Kent and Edward Villella are still around to coach it.

    There are actually 4 ABT corps women who are Chinese.

    His debut was Wednesday and it was fantastic.  Looking forward to seeing him again and again!

    Hasn't paid her dues?

    So we criticize the company for not promoting people fast enough, and then we criticize dancers for wanting more?

     

    She joined the company in 2011 and was made a soloist in 2015. She's been dancing leading roles for several years now. I think she's paid her dues.

    Interesting op ed on Koch and his greatest legacy being global warming.  I admire how the public in Britain have demanded that certain arts organizations stop taking dark money.  The same  fervor has not taken hold here in the U.S.  Instead, we have the  head of ABT mourning the loss of Koch.

    There is a good article from March on the Sacklers and donations in particular, which broadly supports your point regarding Britain being ahead of us on this, although US organizations are also refusing contributions and others are considering doing so:

    I agree too about the age issue and waiting around for a decade, and happy those who don't see chances to move on vs sitting around hoping or praying! I know this must be a big draw since it is in NYC and when it was under Misha, but through the years I see the changes under McKenzie, plus back then there were only a handful of great companies around, but now things are different and there are more options, so I can't imagine sitting around waiting for a part of 10 years?! I can see the stamina and strength you need for the full-lengths, and there is a difference between a 20 to 30 year old IMHO.

    Both Matthews and Kajiya were getting principal roles before they left. Him with some regularity, she more and more that final season.

    Their decision to leave seems to have been based on the fact that there wasn't going to be space for both of them to be principals for some time at least, and that is understandably what they wanted. Also he was from Texas and was going home.

     

    Waski was getting very good roles at ABT including Myrtha. She was then out for a year injured and was just back this year. She is also not a good example of him not giving people opportunities.

    I agree but I do think he did have an injury in the spring. If I recall he had been cast for some Purple Rothbarts and had to pull out?
