  1. Wonderful analysis, pherank. In the Tanny documentary, there is a brief clip of La Valse showing the scene where Death confronts The Girl in White. The way Tanny dons the necklace, looks into the mirror and pours her beautiful arm into the black glove is simply stunning.

  2. I have one (1) ticket available for the New York Film Festival screening of the documentary, "Afternoon of a Faun: Tanaquil LeClerq" on Sunday, October 13 at 6:00 PM in the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center, 144 W. 65th St.

The price of the ticket is $22.00 cash and I will meet the buyer at 5:00 PM on October 13, one hour prior to the screening. Please send me a private message if you are interested.

  3. This is the second time I've seen Vishneva and Gomes dance R&J. Am I the only one who saw that something was wrong with Marcelo? His dancing was elegant as always, but his technique didn't wow me the way it has in the past. I got the impression he might be injured. In the pas de deux at the tomb that final lift where he throws Diana into his arms there was a clear bobble. Marcelo recovered, but I thought for a split second that he might drop her. I feel bad for Marcelo -- he had an off night.

Diana was exquisite last night. Powerful, poignant acting and seamless technique. She was riveting and showed in every moment what a complete artist she is. Their first curtain call was so moving. Diana, still in character, hugging Marcelo with her head on his shoulder. A magical moment! I hope someone captured that on their camera.

  4. Why doesn't ABT record some of these performances for DVD? I know I would rush out to buy a DVD of Vishneva and Gomes in this, and I'm sure many others would too.

Excellent question, abatt! Long ago, PBS stopped broadcasting ballet for lack of funding. ABT could rally it's wealthy donors to fund recorded performances for DVD release. McKenzie should push this diligently. Think of all the great work that could be available to the general public? Not only the magnificent Vishneva-Gomes partnership, but so many from the past, such as the Ferri-Bocca partnership -- their R&J, Giselle, Bayadere. The list goes on and on.

  5. Smirnova's Odette/Odile struck me as "cold" also. However, she's only 22 years old, possesses considerable technique and gorgeous port de bras/upper body movement. Watch her Nikiya Act I on You Tube and there it is. It's rare that a ballerina nails all the complexities of O/O on her first try. Let's give Smirnova time to grow and mature as an artist. She has the potential for greatness.

  6. Does Carnegie Hall still have containers of free Ricola drops on every level? I thought that was a great idea since the Ricola wrappers are waxy paper and make less noise that the crunch and crinkle of cellophane.

  7. First live ballet - Approximately 1971-72, NYCB's Nutcracker with Melissa Hayden as SPF. I vividly recall Act II being sheer magic. I was 5 or 6 years old and had never seen such beauty.

When I became a balletomane - The 1979 PBS broadcast of ABT's Sleeping Beauty with Cynthia Gregory and Fernando Bujones.

  8. If living in such a nightmare is needed in order to be part of that institution, then whoever can go on carrying such weight is certainly a champion. If I was a dancer today I wouldn't have any desire whatsoever to belong to such environment. This is a barbaric thing that ought to be watched from far away distance and never dare to be part of. Fair or not, when I see the company in London, I will be thinking..."so this is the troupe in which all that was generated...". Horrible, barbaric, almost unreal...

    Get out of there, Hallberg...

So well said, Cristian. What's happened at the Bolshoi is so monstrous and mindboggling. I still can't wrap my head around it.

  9. In the late 70's, I was in a local New Jersey bookstore and came across a book titled "Ballerinas". The cover had a photo of Patricia McBride in mid jump wearing a long gray-mauve tutu. The book contained profiles of dancers and had a special final chapter on up and coming younger dancers, including Kyra Nichols and Nadezhda Pavlova. Is "Ballerinas" still in print?

    Thank you, all!
