  1. How about a special series on The Swan for ballet dancers? It would be certainly be cost effective since I would presume they would not have to do any work on the rest of the dancer other their the faces. I was, as a parent of a dancer, very put off by the article. As well as everything else that a young dancer must work to master and overcome, now they must also worry if they are beautiful enough in other peoples' eyes as well?
  2. We will be attending on opening night, June 28th. We are visiting from Canada and are very excited to see both the Palais Garnier and POB. It will certainly be the highlight of my DD's trip. Any suggestions as to dress for opening night would be much appreciated! My DD has a favourite poster framed of one of our famous ballerinas, Evelyn Hart, sitting on the POB stage putting on her pointe shoes for a guest performance a number of years ago.
  3. Does anyone know if the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Company's movie of Dracula is out on DVD or will it be?
  4. I just saw an article in the National post Saturday March 6th. Shadow Pleasures is directed and produced by Veronica Tennant and choreographed by Robert Campanela. It is based on prose and poetry by Michael Ondaaje and is "mysterious, sensual, richly imagined". It is being shown on Opening Night on CBC in Canada March 11 at 8:00 p.m. and on Bravo! March 17 at 7:30 p.m. EST. Margie Gillis, Gail Skrela and Sean Ling are featured performers. Choreography includes Andrea Nunn and Veronica Tennant. As well as her long career with NBoC she has also won an Emmy and a Gemini for her work as a producer and director.
  5. I saw Arias this weekend performed by Alberta Ballet, including the piece by Margie Gillis. It was light, pretty and pleasant to watch but I was not amazed by it. It was the fourth piece of the evening and I found I was starting to check out my watch. I was most intrigued by Lorraine Chapman's Hand over the Head. The dancers of Alberta Ballet always seem to put their full effort into presenting these new works every year. It received a very positive review in the local paper and I am by no means as knowlegable as many who post reviews on this forum. It was a pleasant enough performance but it will not be memorable to me. Recently I was able to see Edouard Lock's Amelia (La La La Human Steps). I loved it on many different levels and would go out of my way to see another of his productions.
  6. This Albertan will be seeing the Festival of New Works this Saturday in Edmonton. I always enjoy this presentation by Alberta Ballet even if I do not appreciate an individual piece. I am finding myself increasingly using the "Would I want to see my dancer in this particular production?" yardstick now that is becoming (dare I say it) more of a possibilty.
