  1. What amazed me about Paul Wylie is he was always living his skating, even in practice (I'm speaking of his pro years, I have never seen him practice during jis eligible years beside during the Lalique Trophy and the olympic games). During the 1995 Miko Masters skaters were practising in our rink. They were on the ice alone for a rehearsal of their routines, and of course, during that time, the others were warming up near the ice or were watching from the benches. Kids were looking for autographs and pictures, and when Paul came on the ice and began his Schindler's Routine, everyone was just caught by his skating and it was like the time stopped, people suddently stopped what they were doing and watched. It was just magical ! I have never seen something like that again !

  2. Estelle, I'm sorry but I don't know if there are some copyright issues for the variations the dancers perform. But that's a very interesting question and I will try to find the answer B)

Thanks for the infos on Martha Graham

And for Mathilde Froustey, what I said wasn't related to what you said but rather to what people were saying that day : the people I know were thinking (and still think I believe :grinning: ) her performance was so so and she was too childish !

  3. Well, Estelle, here are the dancers who impressed me the most in each category :

    First, the ladies :

    - I liked Sarah Kora Dayanova the most. Her free variation was Aurore's variation (Act I) from the Sleeping Beauty. I don't understand why she hasn't been ranked. She was clearly the best in that level, to my mind. Her two variations were very good, with some excellent technical backgrounds and a good presence !

I also noticed Miho Fuji's La Bayadere ( Act II, Nikya's variation), very moving, the smile of Emilie Hasboun in her compulsory variation, she had some mistakes in her free one ( Grand Pas Classique), Laurene Levy, of course, very nice performances in both variations; Charline Giezendanner's free variation was just a pure joy. Otherwise, I also like Charlotte Ranson, (Paquita, variation of the Grand Pas, Act II), and I thought Mathilde Froustey wasn't that bad although she's very young and a bit childish !

Laura Hequet danced Raymonda's variation, act II. She was good, and a lot of people were saying she would be ranked first :)

    Coryphées :

Of course, Dorothée Gilbert !!!! Clearly the leader of that level, two excellent performances, also a pure joy !

Also Aurore Cordellier, although the she looked a little tense and shy during her free variation, Severine Westermann's les mirages ( ), and Eve Grinsztajn' Nikiya.

    Premiere danseuse :

Well, acording to me, nobody shouldn't have been promoted this year.

I noticed Celine Talon, because of her Graham's variation, but didn't understand the meaning very well, since I don't know the story of the piece of which it is extracted

    For the men:

I was beginning to be tired, but :

    -quadrilles

I liked the best Samuel Murez (The phantom of the Opera) , Martin Chaix (Push to come, Twyla Tharp) and Aurelien Houette (Paul Taylor 's Speak in Tongues, solo of the preacher).

The last two were some pleasant suprises, and I have to say I don't usually like what isn't ballet but just for that time..., :)

    -Coyphées

Matthieu Ganio, the best of the field, and for sure THE tomorrow star !

    Amazing !

Also Yong Geol Kim, a very interesting interpretation of Maurice Bejard's Arepo, ( Eric Vu An 's variation)

The dancers work on their variation with their coach, if they have a one, alone, or with a colleague !

  4. Hi Naoko and a very happy new year to everyone :flowers:

Aurore Cordellier was very good, but she's still very young and a little shy, thus she looked tense during her Esmeralda's variation, she could have been more expressive and more sensual but the talent is there and no doubt, one will speak of her in the next years. She just need to have a little more time and maturity ! :flowers:

Glad you liked what you saw ! I think if you wish to speak about the POb and Balanchine, we may open a new thread :grinning: ?

  5. Well, I'm a former skater, so I think I can speak about the lack of training time :

she's right, when you're in the Grand Prix circuit, you can't really say you train during the grand prix season. Why ? in her case, it means three weeks away from home, and when you finally get home, you have recover from the competition during at least two days ! During the GP season, you don't train as much as usual, I would say you just try to keep up what you did during summer. And training on the competition site has nothing do do with practising at your homerink: in most of the cases, you only have two 45 mns practise sessions, and that's all. At home, you generally skate four to five of sessions per day. And when you train at a competition site, the judges are watching, so you're very careful and just try to impress them : that mean you don't jump as much as home, because the main goal is to avoid falling !

  6. Well for me the highlights of the year were :

    - The Nureev's tribute. It was very moving. When I saw the Defile, so many memories came to my mind. And it was a great joy to see Elisabeth Platel, Moniques Loudieres and Isabelle Guerin on stage again. Also Sylvie Guillem of course, although she wasn't featured in the Defile: I thought it was a great mistake. Both Laurent Hilaire and Manuel Legris in le Chant du compagnon errant, a very strong image.

    - Mac Millan's Manon with both Clairemarie Osta and Sylvie Guillem. Each of them is unique but they have someting in common : Both of the two showed us in her very own way some very strong emotions.

-The School annual performance, especially Jean-Guillaume Bart's Péchés de Jeunesse and Claude Bessy's Mouvements. From Mouvement, I treasure one image : all the kids when they are running from the Foyer de la danse to go in front of the stage. From Peché de jeunesse, I keep on my mind the spirit of the performance : it is very appropriate for teenagers, full of light and freshness.

-Giselle with Elisabeth Marin: she's the best, simply amazing and stunning !!

Of course, her technical backgrounds are weaker now, but what an artist !

-La petite danseuse de Degas : yeah the music is a nightmare  but overall I liked it. You can find the choreo is a bit disorganized of course but so are some Dega's paintings after all. :P And Laetitia Pujol was a pleasant surprise of that production !

-Nijinski's by the Hamburg's Ballet : very typical Neumier's work, some very good dancers, a good story and tones of emotions !! Mrs Lefevre, if you ever read this, I would like to see the Magnificat again on the POb's stage !!!

Well, right now, that's all !

  7. Yes Inga, I saw the competition.

For Charline Giezendanner and Mathieu Ganio, here is what I think :

-Yesterday, Mathieu was amazing, and he's only 19 years old. His dance is very clean for such a young man and he's a very elegant dancer. He's really a dancer of his own although both his parents are former dancers. He had no rival yesterday and in the near future you'll hear about him a lot, and also about his younger sister Marine, a pupil of the POB school.

-To my mind, Charline's compulsory variation was just so so because she looked tense, but her free variation was very good and she brought a lot of joy and had a big smile on her face. She was vivacious, clean and precise. She wore a light green dress with some ribbons of the same color in her hair. She could have placed higher I think.

  9. Naoko,

yes, it was Laurent Hilaire who danced with Sylvie Guillem. I liked him very much although technically speaking he was very inferior to her, and I have been thinking that has an impact on the unity of the pair, although artisticaly speaking they're a good match, and anyway, Laurent Hilaire's visions of des Grieux is staying extraordinary. But you'll be able to see that by yourself ! We have a really nice weather in Paris right now, and thus there are the sales so I hope I will enjoy your time in Paris. I:D

I'm sorry, but I don't really have a lot of time right now to write a lot but will try to write a more detailed review the next week

  10. I saw Sylvie Guillem as Manon tonight and she was absolutely wonderful (OK I'm a little partial, since she's one of my favorite dancer) She even got a standing ovation, which is very rare at the POB. More we were getting into the baller better she was ! I will write more later, since I'm very tired now. I also saw Claire-Marie Osta the last week and she didn't disapointed me. She was dancing with Nicolas Leriche, and I think she was better than him, she was just mesmerizing ! I didn't' saw Aurélie Dupont but heard she was also very good !

  11. Well, Naoko, I don't think shops will be closed, but otherwise, there will be I think a lot of problems with public transport, and I'm afraid that the strike may affect Air France and your plane. One of the solutions ( if you are able to catch your plane )would be (if you can afford it) to rent a room in a hotel near the airport or to take a cab from the airport to your hotel, but it's expensive, and it's not something I would do because I assume that the traffic in Paris will be difficult because of the demonstrations in the streets...

I hope someone will provide you with some better advices, but here are my thoughts...

  12. Well, I'm not Su-Lian, but I may be of some help:

Yes, Su-Lian is right, there always are some tickets to buy before the performance, I did an internship and a schoolwork on the POB, so I'm aware of that.

But you have to queue for a long time if you want to purchase some of them. Generaly, you can buy some very good seats. And your chances of getting a good seat are better if you want only one ticket! Good luck!
