I have tickets to the Jan 27th show and I was counting on seeing Sara Mearns in Walpurgisnacht. She is unexcelled in the role I think. I am sad to hear she is out for the first week of shows. She is a rare talent and I am so grateful to have seen her perform so much. But I'd hate to think that her body is starting to give out for good. That would be very sad!

Even though I no longer live in NY, I would come in for sure to see her retirement show. But hopefully that's a long way off!

This is my favorite role for Sara in all of her many (more famous/more important) roles that she has danced. She dances this like a fury and that long diagonal towards the end is always astonishing.

Phelan has been dancing the lead in Walpurghisnacht in NYC, I believe. Or at least rehearsing it. I can't remember where I saw that. Maybe I saw her debut last winter...

If Phelan can't do it because of Liturgy I think Kikta would be a great choice, or LaFreniere. I would guess Tess Reichlen used to dance it? I remember Lauren Lovette doing the soloist role. There are no other current principals that would seem to be ideal casting for Walphurgishnacht.

Rodeo was one of Peck's best works.  It's not common for a choreographer to revisit the same music with different choreography.  I assume he will not repeat his choreography from Rodeo, since that was a stand-alone work.

I think he is, though -- the podcast suggested that it's the same choreo, just tweaked a little bit. It sounded like Sara is first cast and from photos on Instagram, Mira Nadon second cast.

  4. Happy new year!

I was just reviewing the offerings coming up -- between 5 performances of the full-length Peck and 14 Sleeping Beautys, there's less variety in the programs and chances for new casting than I would hope. How many casts of Sleeping Beauty? 5?

Looking forward to any reports on Emma von Enck's debut as Sugarplum tonight! She and Mejia seem like a pair that will work, and look, great together. Also I guess someone must be replacing Tiler Peck as Dewdrop, but the casting sheet has not been updated.

I think this is Mira Nadon as Dew Drop tonight ahead of her SPF debut tomorrow --

  6. On instagram stories, Tiler Peck says she has covid and is out for her next three Nutcracker performances -- so that would be SP tomorrow matinee, DD Sunday mat, and Tuesday DD.

Also, looks like Tyler Angle and Megan LeCrone have been replaced this week/next.

Seems like LeCrone, Pereira and particularly Pazcoguin haven't been cast much in Nutcracker this year. Although Pereira did get a a few SPF's. And when was the last time Brittany Pollock performed? Pollack, Pazcoguin and LeCrone became soloists in 2013, Pereira in 2009. None of them are on principal track (so it seems to me). I have to wonder how much longer they'll be there. Also, from looking at Nutcracker casting it seems Olivia MacKinnon is being given a lot of opportunities, as a corps member. I haven't seen her in Nutcracker, any have impressions of her? I feel like management might be testing her.

I think Brittany Pollack is/was out on maternity leave?  -- SORRY just checked her insta, https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl1jIJogJws/?hl=en

    She has achilles tendinitis.

Mearns has not danced in Nutcracker in a long time. She withdrew last season due to stress and mental health issues.  This season she has been replaced.

She's been pretty quiet on Insta too. Also, Emilie Gerrity has Covid (per insta stories) so is out of her shows this week, Tiler Peck danced with Chan last night.

Sorry, just checked the instagram: Brittany Pollack has achilles tendinitis:

I saw Megan Fairchild dance Sugarplum as a corps member WAY back in the day.

Was this the one she wrote about in her book that was a complete disaster? A debut with Joaquin DeLuz that went sideways.

Ashley Bouder had posted to her stories that she had to have her ankle drained and so she's out this week (it might have timed out by now).

It's interesting to me that Peter Walker is only cast once so far (with Mira Nadon for her debut) and Harrison Ball not at all.

Child report from the Wednesday morning Nutcracker was more about the noisy audience than the dancers on stage, I'm afraid. He did bring home the playbill and he saw VonEnck/Meija and Hod as Dew Drop. There was one principal -- Daniel Ulbricht showed up to do Candy Cane at 11 am.

Hope your son can provide a few comments for BA! 😀

He’s actually a student at Ballet Tech so I’ve already told him to watch Roman's jump. He'll be attending with his ballet teacher Ashley Tuttle (and potentially watching his allegro teacher, Robert LaFosse, on stage). Only in New York, kids!

Yes and Tiler Peck as Dewdrop, it could be quite a performance. If anyone is there please report. Also, I noted on instagram that some of the dancers were mentioning shows for students. There had been some discussion here about ticket prices, and giving kids an opportunity to see Nutcracker. Does anyone know how those performances work? Are the kids brought in from schools? Are the tickets subsidized? Just wondering how it works, if anyone knows.

They host public school kids for matinees — the whole audience is children. My son is headed to the show tomorrow with his 6th grade class where he gets to see a Roman/Emma preview.

  11. Good morning! For those of you who are interested in non-nut news, there's been a bunch of rehearsal photos of the full length Justin Peck that he's working on now on Instagram (in the main feed at his account and on Devin Alberda's, @dalberda). For those of you concerned about the under-casting from the fall season, Mira Nadon seems to have a featured role, this from her instagram stories:

This looks just like the pas from Rodeo, so I am wondering if he's somehow incorporating it into the new work since it's a full length Copland?

  12. Hi all!

I am having a crazier-than-usual September and October and have not been able to join in the discussion as much as I would like. I've seen several programs, however, and find the company full of energy with some really sparkling standout moments. It makes me excited for the winter rep and what debuts will come.

I saw Unity's 2nd movement in C this Tuesday with a sold-out crowd -- Tuesday is one of my subscription nights so I paid no attention to what was on the bill and showed up to a packed house. Unity really brought me Allegra Kent vibes (this is just from watching the German television recording). She felt smaller on stage than I am used to -- but we've been seeing only Maria, Tess and Sara for so long in this role. I had a sense of melancholy from her. I was less impressed by Alec Knight I am afraid to say. He lacked finesse in his partnering. I guess I never realized how tall he is (taller than Peter Walker, as was apparent when I saw Concertino last Sunday). The tall ones will/should always get lots of looks, also considering the potential for Nadon/LaFreniere/Kikta as principals in the near future.

As for the new pieces, I liked the Abraham even though it felt "Forsythe" in some moments, like KA had watched a lot of Forsythe and perhaps was more inspired than he realized. And . . . don't hate me but I LOVED the costumes for Play Time. They looked incredible on stage!

That's great news about Firebird. Was not looking forward to West Side Story Suite on an otherwise solid program. The singing feels so awkward and out of place.

With you here, JuliaJ! I loathe the singing. I can barely get through the "comedy" bit at the beginning of Slaughter, either -- but at least wooden acting is less horrible than pitchy singing.

Bellawood, did Peter Walker dance last night? I'm puzzled that he's listed for last night, but replaced later in the week.

He did and acquitted himself well, though Sterling was the star. He did very well in the pas overall, and particularly at the end when his huge hand covers her face -- I love watching Joseph Gordon dance this role but always felt that he and Lauren Lovette were too sweet together. I always think of this role as being pretty menacing at the end of the pas and he nailed it.

Overall last night was quite lovely, if a little long (I think EWG could be trimmed by 10 minutes). DSCH was firing on all cylinders. Joe Gordon was dancing the Joaquin role and KJ Takahashi the Gonzalo and they were really snappy. KJ had a little issue on the final shoulder lift with Indiana but she saved it. She was amazing. This is a ballet where you can really "see" the dancers it was made on and this role is 1000% Ashley Bouder in her Allegro prime. I never thought Brittany Pollock really did it with the required explosiveness but Indiana does.

They only sold through the second ring last night, btw. People with 3rd ring subscriptions were called and offered orchestra seats, as per the intermission gossip.

@brokenwing, I feel you on the Mira stuff, but I think @canbelto has the right of it -- she's just off ankle/foot surgery and there have been no hints that she's being undercast. She's won the Princess Grace award and the Clive Barnes award this year. I would be shocked if she isn't Sugarplum and more coming up. That said, I will be very excited to see her dance the prima roles (Symphony in C 2nd! Diamonds!) when they come her way, hopefully much sooner than later.
