    Where?

  2. 1. Doesn't Estee Lauder have a relationship to the Met?

    2. All of Misty's products are in the Met shop, addressing all ages.

    3. Tods is advertising with Eric Underwood and K. Jenner/Bolle, so Jenner appears with ballet a lot.

    4.  I thought I saw a Dior perfume ballet ad a long time ago.

    5. A pr agent once asked me if a client wanted to pay for placement, so that is always a factor.

    6. Someone instagramed putting deodorant on his feet, so I guess scent is a big issue.  Bless poor Mr. B - wet cats and dogs mixed with ballet stalls

I would also suggest the performance with Copeland.  Afterwards, you'll be able to discuss what you saw and what you felt about her performance in an informed way, as an eyewitness.  In addition, you'll also experience the nonpareil dancing of Cornejo and Abrera, both of whom are truly special artists.

In this regard, are any rehearsals of Giselle open this year? Rehearsals are where I've done a lot of comparisons, and seen people on whom I wouldn't spend money.

Yes, that's pretty much right, as I recall as well. I too would have to check the details at home. But in addition to that, the Act III role of Odile was rather different from the "black swan" character we have today. Wiley quotes extensively from the original libretto for the 1877 version, so I'll try to check the details there.

I have just read about the transposition, not addition.  Did both occur?

Different people have different opinions about everything about ballet.  There isn't a single dancer who is universally loved or thought beautiful, and the only people to whom this is truly important are the people who are making hiring, booking, and casting decisions and, secondarily, in many cases, the dancers' colleagues.

There's are several reasons we have a policy about discussing the discussion, which includes discussing each other, but the main one is that pissing contests and score-keeping are tedious.

C'mon, Helene, you know you can piss the farthest. (j/k, a high compliment)

"Does not have a beautiful face"

That's a bit cruel. Having a beautiful face is not a prerequisite to being an excellent dancer. I can think of many dancers whose face is less than handsome/beautiful.

I think David Hallberg has a beautiful physique, especially his high arches.

Well everything is beautiful at the ballet. No, really, I meant fans of bolle are accused of superficially caring only about beauty.  Many marinsky trained ballerinas are described routinely based on appearance. Gomez's sex appeal is usually mentioned. But hallberg is either, I believe, inaccurately  called a beauty, or his fans are not called out for attending to see his beautiful face.

Just to correct the record — though recognizing that you noted your uncertainty — my opinions are quite different from your characterization of them here. But I know that doesn't detract from the point you're actually making — which is a good one — about personal tastes.

Justly. I should not skim over the word "not".

    4) Severe lack of creativity and vision.  While the company is supposedly America's classical company, the dancers should be afforded the opportunity for strong contemporary work.  Looking around at the other large companies in the U.S. and abroad, they are all performing works which afford the dancers the opportunity to work with current, contemporary, and proven choreographers.  (PNB, SFB, Boston, and numerous European companies come to mind.) While many here will disagree, I am delighted that the dancers are working with McGregor.  I do not consider Lang, Millipied, and the latest announcement of Dorrance, to be of the caliber the dancers deserve.  Obviously, an opinion.  I also wonder why the company has not joined in on the MacMillan celebration or Robbins celebration (I realize they performed "Other Dances.")

Is this what people want or expect from ABT or is it the company's role?

I think Wed matinee is the most dreaded spot on the roster.  Did you ever see Vishneva or Roberto Bolle in a Wed matinee?  I don't think so.

    RB With Xiomara matinee.

I think Misty may have matinees for school kids.

Copeland is just a cash cow, plain and simple.

Too bad Disney goers, school groups, movie viewers, Barbie buyers, children's book buyers, will not discover what a ballerina is and can do.

Most excited about Harlequinade and anything classical with Schevchenko or Lane. No interest whatsoever in AFTERIGHT, made less palatable by being paired with one of the weaker Ratmanskys in the rep, Firebird. Nyet and Nyet.

LOL, traded mine in to avoid FB (seen three times already by default), but would like to check out Afterite and Harlequinade. Too bad they are not together (like the good principal/mediocre dancer pairings.)

I'm not an opera buff but tag along with my sister and we always notice the paucity of children, at least compared with ballet performances.

Old woman here, cannot see appeal, although tried. BTW, why is Mimi tragic? Sad, sick, dies - but not "Greek tragedy."

    Butterfly has it much worse.

It's interesting to note that the RB seems to subsidize McGregor's one act ballets when they appear - certainly in their premiere outings - by subsidizing the ticket prices.  They are much lower than the full lengths certainly.  (If memory serves this was true for the premiere of Woolf Works as well.) I don't know if this will be true for ABT's triple outing in this regard.

I bought the RB tape and paid to see SFB and watch WB Day and can't understand it.

In fact, it was sheer luck that Stella had learned Giselle and performed it numerous times with the Australian Ballet  (or was it New Zealand Ballet?) only a few months before she  unexpectedly and on short notice stepped into the ABT Giselle when Semionova left.

Sheer luck?  I think it was hope, hard work, and planning.  For example, Paulina Waski has been posting her regional Giselle for years and now is starting with Myrtha at ABT.  Everyone discusses waiting for the "understudy opportunity".  All dancers learn these roles in school, too.

People do react to dancers very differently and no-one can talk someone into liking a dancer they don't like.

Yes, that is why I asked. I did not understand the (seemingly uniform) point of view that I have encountered.  No need to persuade anyone in any direction, though.

For example, elsewhere, I think nanushka (forgive me for not looking it up) mentions that most of ABT is not "world class", citing, for example, Hermano Cornejo. No one disagreed.   Although he is not my favorite dancer, I think he is a top tecnician. He wowed with the Cubans at BalletNow in California and was breath-taking in ABT galas (although I prefer his DQ to his RJ).  Nevertheless, she and others supported Hee Seo and Isabella Boylston as world class, I think without disagreement, when they have many detractors, especially here (although under other topics), who cite their faults and failures (some of which I disagree with), and cannot compare to, say, Svetlana Zakharova, Viktoria Tereshkina, Ulyana Lopatkina, Ekaterina Kondaurova, Diana Vishneva, Marianella Nunez, Lucia Lacarra, Aurelie Dupont, many NYCB principals, or older ballerinas.

Yeah, Abrera is not an option for Swan Lake. She was promoted too late. Even then, she might never have been a good fit for it, much like Alessandra Ferri or any number of other ABT principals that have come and gone without doing O/O.

She is not like Ferri in that regard.  Swan Lake would be excellent for her. We watched years of Myrtha and saw her excel as Giselle finally. I see no difference.

I didn't write the remark you're responding to, but personally I read "always seemingly injured" with the seemingly modifying always rather than injured — i.e. "it seems like he's always injured" (with always being obviously somewhat hyperbolic), not "he always has these so-called injuries that may not be real."

I may, of course, be wrong.

    nope, not wrong

Completely agree with that re Hallberg.  Perfect proportions, but not much stage presence, acting ability or charisma. He improved after his stint at the Bolshoi.  I always enjoyed Gomes more, despite the fact that he didn't have the perfect ballet body like Hallberg.

" As a showcase for Hallberg's beautiful lines, airy jumps and inward style of dancing, I can't think of any better piece than Ashton's Dance of the Blessed Spirits. "

He is gentle an moving, but he seems to drag his feet, not float.

I agree, Gomes has charisma and stage presence.  He also has partnering strength and selflessness.  Maybe that is why I never understood the hype elsewhere.

  19. I have seen Hallberg many times and cannot understand the hype.  He cannot lift very well.  He is very slight.  He does not have a beautiful face.  He seems very inward, rather than focusing on his partner. His book was very self-centered, too, as well as boring.  (I can't believe what he said about Michele or that he thought leaving her last name out was meaningful. He also ignored half the company.)  Half of what he said sounded like a cliche.  He is always seemingly injured.

I keep asking for enlightenment, but all anyone ever says is conclusory.
