So tonight it’s Oxana as Odette/Odile (Swan Lake). This is the performance that I’ve probably most looked forward to, along with Alina Somova’s Cinderella excerpt. They both did beautifully at the Gala, perhaps the highlights, for me, so far.

Wish I could stay on as long as you can -  afraid of finding on my return that my wife has had the locks changed and filed for divorce !  :P

Renata Shakirova  — An Absolutely Precious Bundle of Sunshine Sweetheart !

I fully subscribe to your description. My "big discovery" of 2015 (as Kitri) a couple of weeks after her debut. Finally got to meet her backstage last month after the Shurale matinee.

Buddy I had the same feeling when I saw Kim as Solor two years ago - was wondering when he was going to hit the roof !

  3. Sad to learn that I have thrown away money - these two evenings were initially posted as "ballet soloists' galas" and I thought they would be similar to the two evenings of "gala-concert" in October 2016 which were very enjoyable. I got tix for both evenings and suddenly just a week or two ago these two events became "A Play for Him" ..... ????   Now look at what program has been posted :  https://www.bolshoi.ru/en/performances/10000/

  4. I have posted Ismene Brown's 2009 Moscow interview with Vikharev under "Writings on Ballet". With his Sleeping Beauty reconstruction (?) revived at Mariinka and his Coppelia coming up at the Bolshoy on April 20th this might be well worth a read by any members who have not read it before. (incidentally, I am hoping to see Coppelia at the Bolshoy on April 20th and 21st - so sad he isn't around to supervise it)

This.  I love the way Sizova seems to be under enchantment, dreaming, not quite awake even as she dances.  In the Tereshkina video above, she seems wide awake which I guess is just a different interpretation, but I prefer this one.

Sorry I forgot to reply to this reference - seems I somehow missed it and then looked for it myself. That makes two of us who miss this beautiful melody - glad that sometimes we are in sync !  :D

  6. Ismene Brown had gone to Moscow in 2009 for the Bolshoy premiere of Vikharev's recons of Coppelia and interviewed him at the time. Last June she included this interview in her obituary for Vikharev posted on ArtsDesk. I found it extremely interesting and posted it on this forum, and I am bringing it up again in case it had escaped the attention of some members at the time, well worth reading imho at a time when we are discussing Vikharev's SB which started off this movement in 1999 :

  7. Dear Buddy and MadameP  :  I thought I did not hear one of my most beloved melodies on Friday evening - it's at time 5:27 on this video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qo1c7h059Vw&list=PLBA87816B22473D82&index=14

Am I right or was I dozing off at the time ??  Would appeciate if you can confirm or deny. Btw this is an excellent annotated set of videos for the complete SB music - my gratitude to whoever took the trouble.

Not really. To each his own. The Gala -- I Loved It !

I am glad that you enjoyed it - I was expecting something bigger and "better".  Before they posted this "insipid" program how many people who bought tix blind like myself would have expected to get new choreo and Balanchine instead of classic Petipa ??  Why not put on the wonderful 3rd Act of Paquita which is in repertory, and the "white scene" from Bayadere for example, to make it a true celebration of Petipa, instead of Keikhel and Balanchine ??  But the Vikharev Sleeping Beauty on Friday eve, at the historic stage with the panorama and the violin solo more than made up for the "gala".

Your link didn't work for me but googling "financial times mariinsky sleeping beauty" did.

For the benefit of any members who may not be aware :  a very simple trick to bypass login for reading articles on subscribers-only websites such as the FT or NYT etc is to copy and google the "subject" ie the headline. For this Laura Cappelle review it is :  Petipa Celebration, Mariinsky Theatre, St Petersburg — a rich tapestry brought to life

PS :  I may incur the wrath of Buddy for saying this, but I think the two stars Cappelle awarded to the gala is very generous, over the top  :P:P

Alina Somova appeared with Xander Parish performing the final act duet from The Sleeping Beauty and once again I was in the heavens

First time I saw Xander Parish live .... damn good dancer imho, technique as good as the other Marii male leads I have seen so far excepting maybe Kimin Kim, good "princely" looking ..... so maybe Fateyev is not as dumb as some people make him out to be. I recorded the Mezzo livecast and they did an interview with Fateyev at the interval, have not been able to watch it yet.
