  1. We're pleased to meet you, Ann. shake2.gif

As you've browsed through our forums, you've probably noticed that while our primary focus is ballet, we discuss films, music, literature and the fine arts as well. We hope you'll feel free to contribute throughout.

And if, as a forum newbie, you have any questions, please don't be shy about asking. Every single one of us has been there, believe me. :)

    Welcome to BalletAlert!

  2. Being very new to BA, I know no one so I'm not sure if any of you get together or visit when you happen to be at the same performance.
As long as you have a ticket for the matinee, you can attend the 1:40 lecture on the right side of the Fourth Ring lobby. They'll probably offer intermission talks, too.

    Enjoy it all!

  3. At first, it looked like her R&J on the previous Saturday night, June 15, might be her retirement performance, as she had nothing else on the schedule that season. Would they do a retirement at a Saturday matinee of Swan Lake? Seems odd, but perhaps that's still a possibility.
I expect that when Kent decides to retire, it will be noted on the subscription brochure that ABT publishes in the fall prior. Barring the unforeseen, this is not her last season.
The Sylvia casting on the ABT site used to list all three leads Sylvia, Amita and Orion). Now they are only listing 2. Vasiliev is Orion, but they are just not listing the casting for that character on their website right now.
When ABT lists casting for Giselle, it only lists Giselle and Albrecht in the earliest versions. They add Myrtha and Hilarion later, a few weeks before season starts.
I wonder why Osipova has chosen not to do Sleeping Beauty again w. ABT.
Perhaps it wasn't her decision. ABT has to keep some performances available for its younger, up-and-comers. If they don't get opportunities to perform a range of roles, they'll never develop.
  4. I have two pairs, both of young dancers around the time they were promoted from corps to soloist. One was Judith Fugate's (NYCB), the other Janet Shibata (ABT). As neither of their careers turned out quite as I had wished, I never bought any more to avoid jinxing favorite dancers.

A friend of mine has a pair of Gelsey Kirkland's. I tried one on and was surprised to find that while the box fit me perfectly, the shoe itself was almost two inches too short for my medium-width foot.

...Suzanne Farrell's white shoes -- from "Mozartiana"? -- were a lot more expensive than the rest.
I may be mistaken, but I think Mozartiana's ballerina wears pink shoes. White-shoe ballets include Swan Lake, Diamonds, Monumentum/Movements, and sometimes Symphony in C. NYCB prices shoes according to the dancer's rank. Trick is getting a prima's shoes when she's still in the corps. wink1.gif
  5. Glad to have you here, KEA! :flowers:

We're familiar with the work of Tendu TV and have enjoyed its videos. We look forward to hearing from you. I'm sure you have special insights to contribute.

  6. Even at ABT Kirkland danced the revised version done for her when Balanchine reset Theme and Variations as the final movement of Tchaikovsky Suite No. 3. Gargouillades were added to that version--a case of the ballet being made (from a certain perspective) more difficult.
At around that time, my friends were complaining about the changes in ABT's Theme. I'd never seen ABT's Theme before the Kirkland era. But now they do the same version as NYCB.
And I also don't know what version the Balanchine trust 'authorizes' or what version San Francisco dances.
If The Trust has a consistent policy, it would be the last version, even if the last version contains changes made specifically for a particular dancer. I am glad that I remember, for example, in the Embraceable You pas from Who Cares?, the pre-Watts flat-footed promenade. Unfortunately, I don't have reference points of an earlier version of Theme.
  7. Hi, sjmiller! Thank you for your kind words.

Your background is similar to many of us, and we're glad to welcome you to our forums. We look forward to hearing from you.

  8. On a separate note, since the Koch has no tenant presently, wouldn't it be great if the dance companies that are based in NYC (NYCB, ABT, Ailey, Paul Taylor, so on) could get together a benefit performance with all proceeds going to the Hurricane Relief effort?
Your lips to the gods' ears.

It may take more than the gods' hearing the suggestion. Anyone want to start making phone calls, sending e-mails? If we can get a little committee going here, we may be able to make it happen.

BTW, I'm one of those NYC residents who was effectively untouched by the storm, beyond being shaken by the devastation others have endured. I grew up on the Jersey shore and have been inundated (bad word?) by images of familiar landscapes ruined beyond recognition. My elderly parents who live maybe 10 miles inland now lost electricity and removed to a hotel where my dad slipped in the shower, breaking three ribs. Painful, but no damage beyond the ribs, and he is innately cheerful. His ribs will heal before most of the damage to the community is repaired.

  9. Hello, NYIBC!

Balletomanes, especially balletomanes in the New York area, eagerly look forward to each NYIBC.

Your website and slide share provide a good sample of what sets the New York version apart from other IBCs. I hope you'll keep us updated as events progress -- especially as they become open to the public.

    Welcome to BalletAlert!

  10. I entered "David Letterman" and "Natalia Makarova" into a Google video search and was unable to find it.

    https://www.google.com/search?q=%22david+letterman%22+%22natalia+Makarova%22&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=LUl&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&prmd=imvnso&source=lnms&tbm=vid&sa=X&ei=ZWxnULWgLcry0gH6hIGAAw&ved=0CAwQ_AUoAw

There were some 15,000 hits, but I didn't see show in question. If you're more patient than I, maybe you can sort through and find what you want.

Google, Bing, Ask.com, etc., are great tools.

  11. Moderator's Note:

This thread goes back to December 2000. Only one of the early participants still participates on BalletAlert! Since that time, we have instituted a policy forbidding the trading, buying, selling, sharing, etc. of videos in VHS, DVD or Blu-Ray formats.* We do permit links to videos posted on the internet from recognized hosting sites such as Vimeo and YouTube.

    I am locking this topic.

  12. My full-fledged commercial, all 60 seconds of it, chose to run during Tchai Pas. mad.gif Yes, I would have minded had it run while Peter was speaking, but I would have minded less.

I also realize that in 1984 Brooklyn and BAM did not have the cachet they have now, so performances in Brooklyn might as well have been in Seattle for many.
Likewise, in 1984, Seattle didn't have the cachet it does today. wink1.gif
