  5. Not arguing against Maria Kowroski in Slaughter. She's a beautiful dancer with a great sense of humor. But a couple of years ago, when I told a critic friend who hadn't seen it that I thought Sara Mearns' Slaughter was the performance of the season, he was extremely skeptical. After all, it's a slight ballet, originally created for the Broadway stage, doesn't seem to take itself seriously (nor should it). How could a dancer elevate it to "performance of the season" when so many superior works were on display? I understood, and a few days earlier would have been equally disbelieving that anyone could make Slaughter so important.

My friend went to see Mearns' final performance of that role for that season and reported back that he agreed with me. It is among the more memorable performances I've seen in some 38-39 years of regular ballet attendance.

I'm an unapologetic Balanchine partisan. The single best program of the season, in my opinion? June 9 (closing -- it appears to be the only time these are presented as a program this season):

    • Serenade
    • Stravinsky Violin Concerto
    • Western Symphony.

Whatever you decide, I hope you enjoy.

  6. Hi, balletmor. I'm not sure whether you mean simply an equivalent way of choosing, or the public spectacle of an open forum in which the various companies announce their chosen dancers. In a way the network of competitions serves the former's purpose. The most promising dancers are offered scholarships or contracts by participating and observing companies.

  7. I thought you all might like this quote from the British dance critic Richard Buckle on 3rd Symphony:

...The sexes get together to pose for a victory photograph.

And we know what victories lead to.

I disagree. I don't see any resolution at the end. The closing pose, with the men aggressively poised to pounce, is more foreboding than anything that came before. Here, perhaps, is the ballet's most direct allusion to violence.
  8. For me the most frightening moment is when the ballerina in palest pink [sunday, Vanessa Zahorian, but I first felt it when Lucia Lacarra did it 10 years ago here; both danced it excellently] makes a perfect circle of the stage doing perfect pique turns while the corps girls rush around her chaotically -- I thought she was giongto collide with somebody, like a planet passing through a chaos of asteroids -- or like a soldier moving through a hail of bullets. [i was sitting in the orchestra, seen horizontally, the screen of corps dancers really looks like ONE of them is gong to hit her, you don't know which; I'm told that from upstairs, it's exciting but does not look dangerous because you can see the trajectories do not intersect.
One critic (sorry, don't remember who, but maybe Croce?) described that passage as resembling the signal on a radar screen, with the white radius moving counter-clockwise and the red dot clockwise. I love that image.

For me, it's easy to take in the war/military references without necessarily making 3 Movements into a programmatic ballet. The sense of danger (ha-ha -- I typed that as "dancer") is pervasive, even in the "cheerful" sections of the outer movements. And the second movement? I'm not sure it alludes to war in any way, but I love that pas.

  9. Martine Van Hamel, a great Myrtha, danced Giselle with C Tippett in the seventies(?) . Although she looked too healthy in the 1st act,I thought she did very well in the 2nd act.
Yes, I remember that season, but unfortunately, I never saw van Hamel in that role. It was during a strange four-week ABT season at City Center -- two weeks of Coppelia and two of Giselle. My friends' reaction was very much like yours, bingham. We all hoped she'd be given more opportunities to work on her Giselle.
Cynthia Gregory also did Giselle in that era, partnered by Ross Stretton:

    http://www.nytimes.c...in-giselle.html

Yes, Gregory was in ABT's regular rotation of Giselles. If they were presenting it and she was with the company, she'd be dancing it through the '70s and '80s. I found her unconvincing as both the naive teen and the forgiving spirit, and her attempts at Romantic style were pretty exaggerated for my taste.

  12. It is my distinct recollection from reading Maya's autobiography that she danced Myrtha only - I believe she mentions it in the book that she never danced Giselle. Still, the photo looks more like Giselle than Myrtha, doesn't it?

Or a Chopiniana "sylph"? It's a wonderful photo. Plisetskaya looks remarkably airborne. Not what one would expect from her, even though she was known as a jumper. I never would have thought of her as a Romantic stylist, but at least for the duration of that pose, she was. smile.png

BTW, Cristian, this is a great topic. thumbsup.gif

Did Farrell ever dance "Giselle" or any of the classical full-lengths for Paul Mejia's companies?
Not sure where I read this interview, or who the writer was, but at one point Farrell was asked if she ever wanted to dance Giselle, and her reply was, "Only if Balanchine staged it." It's probably safe to assume that she didn't, but since she was still dancing for many years after that interview, ...dunno.gif

PROGRAM AND CASTING SUBJECT TO CHANGE (04/18/13)

  14. The NYTimes.com front page has the following lead in:

    Maria Tallchief, Balanchine Ballerina, Dies

Ms. Tallchief, a daughter of an Oklahoma oil family, found her way to New York and became one of the most brilliant American ballerinas of the century. She was 88.

I take exception to the declaration that all her importance lies with Balanchine - there's nothing without Balanchine! - which is just wrong. I'm an admirer of Balanchine the artist, but these other people had lives, and long careers, and there is so much more to a life than "they danced under Balanchine". I've always thought of Tallchief as being the first American Prima Ballerina. That's big. That's enough. She also happened to have been trained by Russians, and danced with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and so had a Russian-style of stage presence that wasn't seen in any of the following Amercian dancers - a grandes dame.

A newspaper obit, with its space constraints, cannot cover a whole life or even a whole career, and I would agree with those who said that the Balanchine emphasis was appropriate for reasons of each one's influence on the other. However, even Balanchine might agree with you, pherank.

I have long been intrigued by the fact that, at least while she was present, when Balanchine set his own versions of Petipa's, Ivanov's and Fokine's ballets, he did so on Tallchief. His Swan Lake, Nutcracker, [Raymonda] Pas de Dix, Firebird, Pas de Trois (from Paquita). (Exceptions were Harlequinade, starring McBride, premiered in 1965, the same year Tallchief retired, and Valse et Variations [later Raymonda Variations, another take on that glorious score] in 1961.)

I had the opportunity to ask her the significance of that pattern when she spoke at some event in New York years back. I'm sure I was inarticulate, flustered in the presence of such an important person. She didn't seem to understand what I meant. She seemed taken aback, as if I were asking why Balanchine chose to choreograph on her at all -- definitely not my point.

But that he would make of her a 20th C. Odette and Sugar Plum Fairy and also the Sanguinic lead speaks volumes about her range.

  15. Thank you, AlbanyGirl. Love is certainly in the air at New York City Ballet wub.png -- or maybe it's Europe!

SCchck already posted about the Tiler Peck and Robbie Fairchild betrothal here and about Brittany Pollack and Jon Stafford's here. I'll ask anyone who wishes to comment to do so on those threads.

  16. Ahoy, Neala!toot.gif

Darcy Bussell was a popular ballerina and has many fans among our members, and of course, LaBayadere a greatly loved ballet. I hope you've browsed the forums and found topics that interested you. I also hope you feel free to post and add comments or ask questions when you catch some WiFi.

  17. We're always complaining about the dearth of up-and-coming choreographers. Here's an opportunity to help develop some.

This project makes it possible for new choreographers to develop their craft by providing studio space and a performance opportunity. They're awfully close to their goal with seven (six and a half?) days to meet their goal. This year, the choreographers are working in San Francisco and New York, with two performances in Brooklyn on February 8 and 9.

    What is Nachmo?

Nachmo is your yearly choreographic kick in the pants conceived by Sharyn Korey and Anna Brown Massey. We spur dancers to choreograph by challenging you to work against a deadline. You’ve got one rollicking month from January 1st to the 31st to forge new steps and complete your piece. Your work doesn’t have to be good, nor does it have to be public, but it does have to be done.

For this one month each year, we put aside our excuses, our hesitations, and perhaps our day jobs to work intensely on making dance. Through the communal Nachmo blog, social media, and live events throughout January, we provide opportunities for individual artists to network and collaborate.
